Molas 3D: Advanced 3D Doppler Wind Lidar

The Molas 3D represents a cutting-edge three-dimensional scanning Doppler wind measurement lidar system. It is developed based on the principle of pulsed laser coherent Doppler frequency shift technology. By emitting pulsed laser beams and detecting the frequency shifts of backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols, the system can accurately compute the line-of-sight wind speed and direction at various spatial points. This process enables precise high-resolution reconstruction of three-dimensional wind fields.

This lidar system supports a comprehensive range of scanning modes designed to meet diverse measurement needs:

  • PPI (Plan Position Indicator): Provides horizontal sector or full 360° scanning, ideal for mapping wind fields over extensive areas.
  • RHI (Range Height Indicator): Performs vertical elevation scans, which are suited for capturing vertical wind profiles and understanding boundary layer structures.
  • DBS (Doppler Beam Swinging): Uses multi-beam fixed-direction scans to accurately retrieve both horizontal wind vectors and vertical velocity components.
  • Program Scan: Allows for user-defined custom scanning trajectories, offering maximum flexibility for specialized research applications.

The Molas 3D system achieves a maximum acquisition distance of up to 15 kilometers and a sight detection range of 10 kilometers at an elevation of 600 meters. Vertically, the measurement can extend up to 4 kilometers. The distance resolution is configurable to 15 m, 30 m, 75 m, or 120 m, supporting up to 300 distance layers for detailed data capture. Its line-of-sight wind speed range spans from −75 m/s to +75 m/s with an impressive accuracy of 0.1 m/s. Additionally, the scanning head offers 360° horizontal rotation combined with a vertical tilt from −10° to 190°, maintaining a pointing accuracy of ±0.005°, thereby ensuring highly reliable and repeatable measurements.

The robust housing is rated IP65, while internal components meet the more stringent IP66 protection standards. Data management is highly flexible: data can be stored locally for periods ranging from 5 to 18 months in standard .csv format, and transmitted via 1000BASE-TX Ethernet or through 4G remote access. Furthermore, the system offers multiple output interfaces including Profibus DP, Modbus TCP, and CAN, enabling seamless integration with various control and data acquisition platforms.
