Molas 3D: Advanced Three-Dimensional Wind Measurement Lidar

The Molas 3D represents cutting-edge technology in the field of three-dimensional wind scanning lidar. It operates on the principle of pulsed laser coherent Doppler frequency shift, emitting pulsed laser beams and analyzing the frequency shifts of backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols. This approach allows the device to accurately determine the line-of-sight wind speed and direction at multiple spatial points, enabling precise high-resolution reconstruction of the 3D wind field.

To meet a wide range of measurement demands, the Molas 3D supports multiple scanning modes:

  • PPI (Plan Position Indicator): Performs horizontal sector scans or a full 360° sweep, ideal for constructing wind maps over extensive areas.
  • RHI (Range Height Indicator): Executes vertical elevation scans that capture detailed vertical wind profiles and boundary layer structures.
  • DBS (Doppler Beam Swinging): Utilizes multi-beam fixed-direction scanning to retrieve accurate horizontal wind vectors and vertical velocities.
  • Program Scan: Allows users to define customized scanning paths tailored for specialized research applications.

The system boasts an impressive maximum acquisition distance of 15 kilometers, with effective sight detection at up to 10 kilometers altitude around 600 meters high. Vertically, measurements can reach up to 4 kilometers. Users can select from configurable distance resolutions of 15 m, 30 m, 75 m, or 120 m, supporting as many as 300 distance layers. Wind speed measurements cover a range from -75 m/s to +75 m/s, featuring high accuracy at 0.1 m/s. The scanning head offers full 360° horizontal rotation and vertical tilt from -10° to 190°, with a precise pointing accuracy of ±0.005°, ensuring consistent and reliable data acquisition.

The Molas 3D is engineered to serve a variety of demanding applications, including but not limited to:

Its housing is rated IP65, while internal components meet IP66 standards. Data storage capabilities allow local retention for 5 to 18 months in a standard .csv format. For data transmission, the system supports 1000BASE-TX Ethernet and 4G remote access. It also provides multiple output interfaces such as Profibus DP, Modbus TCP, and CAN, facilitating smooth integration with various control and data acquisition platforms.
