Features of Double-Split Transformers
Improved thermal distribution - Splitting the core and winding into two symmetric halves evens out heat generation, reducing hot spots and improving cooling—important for reliable operation in high-temperature PV environments.
Better parallel operation - Each half can run independently or together, enabling flexible load sharing and allowing the transformer to keep operating if one section is offline, increasing redundancy and availability.
Easier transport and installation - Smaller, lighter components are easier to move to remote or mountainous sites, and on-site assembly is simpler—especially for prefabricated or skid-mounted stations.
Space-saving and modular - The split design supports compact layouts (parallel or L-shaped), making it well suited for space-constrained, modular substations.
Lower electromagnetic interference (EMI) - Balanced magnetic flux and current between the two halves reduce electromagnetic noise, aiding compliance with EMC requirements.
Maintenance flexibility - One side can sometimes be taken offline for inspection or partial maintenance without stopping power delivery—valuable for critical sites like data centers or renewable hubs.
Application
Large photovoltaic power plants use 500 kW as the basic generation unit, and 500 kW inverters are the market standard. Connecting the inverter to the prefabricated (box-type) substation is a critical step in the PV system, so the design must balance cost control with technical soundness. The double-split transformer therefore offers an ideal voltage-boosting solution.
