Planer Knife Setting Gauge Instructions
1. Setting Up the Gauge:
- Before removing the old knives, you must calibrate the gauge based on the existing knife elevation. Attach the magnet swivel feet to the cutter head’s outside diameter, ensuring the center depth gauge magnet is directly over the tip of the old knife.
- Adjust the depth gauge so that the magnet tip contacts the knife tip. Lock the set screw on the depth gauge and note the scale readings for future reference. Repeat this process with both gauges to ensure they are set to the same knife elevation.
2. Removing and Replacing Knives:
- Remove the old planer knives and thoroughly clean the knife pocket to eliminate sawdust and pitch. Install the new sharp blades in the correct orientation, keeping the gib bolts loose so the knives can be adjusted to the proper height.
- Position both setting gauges at each end of the planer head, ensuring the magnetic tip of the depth gauge is directly over the knife tip. The strong magnets will hold the planer knife at the correct elevation and level, allowing you to tighten the gib bolts securely. Repeat this for each knife pocket. Verify that the planer knives remain stable as you tighten the gib bolts. Applying oil to the gib bolt threads can reduce knife movement and increase clamping pressure to prevent the knives from slipping.
3. Setting Knives with No Reference:
- If you need to set planer knives in a head where the knives are already removed, adjust the depth gauge using a shim over the head body or the number scale on the depth gauge so that the knives extend out of the knife pocket approximately 1/16” to 1/8” beyond the head’s body diameter. Consult the machine’s owner’s manual to determine the proper knife tip extension and ensure the knives are not extended too far, which could cause them to strike the table or guards.
- Ensure both gauges are adjusted to the same elevation for consistent knife leveling.
