Woven from wire bent into a regular wave before it reaches the loom, so every joint locks instead of relying on friction. Wire 3.05–6.35 mm, openings 19–99 mm, 56–94 % open area. Supplied as flat panels cut to size, framed or fabricated to drawing.

1. Product Description

Crimped wire mesh — also called pre-crimped mesh — is made by crimping each wire before weaving. The crest of one wire seats into the trough of the wire crossing it, so the two lock together mechanically. Nothing in the panel depends on friction to hold its shape.

Holds its aperture — openings stay square under vibration and impact instead of shifting, which is why crimped mesh is the standard for grading aggregate, ore and coal.

Stiff enough to span — a crimped panel is rigid in its own right and can be used as balustrade or gate infill with only edge support, where plain woven cloth would need tensioning or a backing.

Reads as a pattern — the regular wave catches the light and looks deliberate rather than merely functional, which is why lock crimp and flat top crimp are specified as much for appearance as for duty.

Crimped mesh is coarse by nature: wire from about 1 mm upward, with heavy architectural and screening grades at 3–6.35 mm. Where a specification calls for filtration in tens of microns, a woven or Dutch-weave cloth is the right answer instead — KDL makes both and will say plainly which one fits. Note for drawings: the quoted mesh size is the centre-to-centre pitch, not the opening. A 1 inch mesh in 0.120 inch wire opens 0.880 inch (22.35 mm), not 1 inch.

2. Specifications

Mesh size is centre-to-centre pitch; opening = pitch − wire diameter. Open area = (opening ÷ pitch)² × 100. Weight calculated at 7850 kg/m³ with an allowance for the extra wire length taken up by crimping; actual weight varies by up to 3 % with crimp depth and alloy, confirmed against a sample before production.

Open area and weight move in opposite directions, and both matter. A 1 inch mesh in 0.120 inch wire is 77 % open and weighs 4.5 kg/m² — light, economical, high flow. The same pitch in 0.250 inch wire is 56 % open at 20.1 kg/m²: four times the metal and far more durable, at half the throughput. Screening hard abrasive material justifies the heavier wire; a decorative ceiling panel does not.

3. Choosing a Crimp Pattern

Double crimp — both wires crimped at every intersection, the tightest and most rigid cloth (also called plain weave). Default choice for heavy screening.

Intermediate crimp — wires crimped at every other crossing. The most widely used and most versatile pattern; rigid enough for most screening and architectural work. Start here.

Double & intermediate crimp — all weft wires crimped, warp wires crimped at alternate crossings. Extra rigidity in one direction; common on vibrating screens.

Lock crimp — deep interlock leaving a smooth flat face with no protruding wire ends. Specified by architects for balustrade infill, facades, cabinet fronts and lift cars.

Flat top crimp — a looser weave with flattened crimps giving a level surface. Wears evenly and resists blinding, so it suits damp or sticky material on vibrating screens.

In short: lock crimp where the panel is seen close up; intermediate crimp for general work and best value; flat top crimp where material slides across the mesh; double crimp for maximum life on abrasive material.

4. Applications

Architecture and interiors — balustrade and stair infill, facade cladding and sunscreens, ceiling and wall panels, cabinet fronts, lift car linings, retail fixtures, room dividers.

Screening and grading — vibrating screens for aggregate, sand, gravel and ore; coal and mineral sizing; grain, seed and wood-chip grading; recycling lines; trommel and grizzly panels.

Safety and security — machine guards, bridge and walkway guards, security and anti-climb screens, truck and radiator grilles, rodent and bird control.

Industrial and specialist — acoustic and speaker grilles, filter support and backing screens, aerospace and automotive parts, heat-treatment and washing baskets, barbecue grills.

Supplied as flat panels far more often than roll stock, since the locked construction makes it stiff. We cut to size, weld on frames, fit lugs and hooks, and form baskets, cages and guard panels to drawing.
