Analysis of the Two Core Parts of the Drilling Pump
(1)Power End
The power end is the mechanical assembly that converts rotary power into reciprocating motion of the pistons. It mainly comprises the housing/frame, crankshaft, connecting rods, crossheads, bearings, and gear pairs. External power input drives the crankshaft to rotate; the crankshaft drives the connecting rods, which push the crossheads in linear reciprocating motion; the crossheads connect to the piston rods, driving the pistons of the fluid end back and forth. A forced lubrication system is built into the power end, continuously delivering lubricating oil to the bearings, gears, and friction pairs, which bear huge alternating loads. Because the drilling pump operates under severe impact loads, the power end housing is generally made of high-strength cast steel for impact resistance and vibration resistance.
(2)Fluid End
The fluid end is the working section where the drilling fluid flows through and is pressurized. It directly contacts the mud medium and is the wear-prone area.
Main components: fluid cylinder body, liners, piston assemblies, suction valves, and discharge valves. The piston moves back and forth inside the liner. As the piston retracts, the cylinder chamber volume increases, creating negative pressure, the suction valve opens, and drilling fluid is drawn into the liner; as the piston advances, the pressure inside the cylinder chamber rises, the suction valve closes, the discharge valve opens, and high-pressure drilling fluid is forced into the discharge line.
The liners, pistons, valve seats, and valve flaps (valve plates) are wear parts. Since the drilling fluid contains solid particles such as sand and cuttings, they erode and wear the components at high speed, requiring regular inspection and replacement. Liners are available in multiple bore sizes: changing to a different liner bore diameter changes the pump displacement — the larger the liner bore, the greater the displacement; the smaller the liner bore, the higher the maximum working pressure that can be delivered. On site, liners can be changed according to drilling conditions to match operational requirements.
