Drilling Pump — Key Performance Parameters
1. Rated Working Pressure: The maximum discharge pressure at which the drilling pump is allowed to work continuously over long periods, expressed in MPa. Deep-well drilling requires very high pressure to push the drilling fluid to the bottom hole; the pressure ratings commonly configured for rig drilling pumps are 35 MPa, 50 MPa, and above. The deeper the well and the greater the circulation resistance, the higher the pressure requirement on the pump.
2. Displacement (Flow Rate): The volume of drilling fluid delivered per unit time, commonly expressed in L/s or m³/min. Displacement directly determines the cuttings-carrying capacity; when the hole size is large, a high displacement is required to ensure cuttings return smoothly to the surface.
3. Stroke Length: The travel distance of the piston's reciprocating motion; Stroke Rate (SPM, strokes per minute): the number of piston reciprocations per minute. The stroke rate cannot be increased without limit — excessively high stroke rates sharply aggravate wear on the pistons, liners, and valves, shortening the service life of these parts.
4. Power: The input power of the drilling pump. High-power drilling pumps are generally at the thousand-kilowatt level. On drilling sites, two drilling pumps are typically configured — one main working pump and one standby pump. If the main pump fails, the standby pump is switched in immediately so that drilling operations do not come to a halt, preventing downhole stuck pipe caused by sand settling.
V. Working Medium and Operating Conditions of the Drilling Pump
The medium delivered by the drilling pump is not clean water but drilling fluid (mud). The drilling fluid is mixed with bentonite, barite weighting material, and various chemical additives, and also carries large amounts of cuttings and sand grains. The medium contains solid particles and is abrasive. As a result, the drilling pump components are subjected to continuous erosion and wear.
The equipment operates under extremely harsh conditions: it withstands high pressure and alternating impact loads, running continuously around the clock without interruption. On drilling sites, the drilling pump is among the equipment with the highest failure rates and requires heavy daily maintenance. Piston washouts (fluid leaks), liner wear, valve washouts, and pulsation dampener (air chamber) failure are common faults.
