Drilling Pump — Functions and Roles
The core task of the drilling pump is to apply pressure to and provide flow for the drilling fluid, establishing the complete circulation loop of surface — inside the drill string — bottom hole — annulus — surface. It mainly performs several key operational functions.
First, delivering high-pressure drilling fluid to the bottom hole. The high-pressure drilling fluid flows through the inner bore of the drill pipe to the bit nozzles and jets out at high speed, cooling and lubricating the rapidly working bit, carrying away the large amount of heat generated by the bit breaking rock, reducing bit wear, and extending bit service life.
Second, carrying cuttings from the bottom hole. As the bit breaks the formation and generates large quantities of cuttings, the high-flow-rate drilling fluid discharged by the drilling pump suspends the cuttings and carries them upward through the annulus between the drill string and the wellbore back to the surface, bringing the cuttings out of the wellbore. This prevents cuttings from settling and causing stuck-pipe accidents from sand accumulation, keeps the bottom hole clean, and enables the bit to continue effective rock breaking and drilling.
Third, maintaining pressure balance in the well. By pumping drilling fluid of a certain density, a hydrostatic column pressure is formed in the wellbore to balance the formation pressure, preventing oil, gas, and formation water from flowing into the well, guarding against kick and blowout risks, protecting the wellbore wall, and preventing wellbore collapse.
Fourth, providing the power medium for downhole power tools. During directional and horizontal well drilling, the drilling fluid flows through the downhole positive displacement motor (PDM); driven by the hydraulic energy supplied by the drilling pump, the motor (Mud Motor) rotates, enabling build-angle (deviation) and trajectory-adjustment operations.
Fifth, supporting special downhole operations, including circulation well flushing, well killing, and lost-circulation plugging. When lost circulation or kick hazards occur, the drilling pump prepares weighted drilling fluid for kill operations; when the formation experiences fluid loss, plugging materials are pumped in to complete wellbore lost-circulation treatment. Pre-cementing well flushing and reaming (well conditioning) also rely on high-displacement circulation by the drilling pump.
