Rotary System of Oil Drilling Equipment
The core function of the rotary system is to drive the downhole drill string and bit in continuous rotation to break formation rock. As the core power system for drilling penetration, it directly determines drilling efficiency and wellbore quality.
1. Top Drive System (TDS): The mainstream core rotary equipment of modern drilling rigs. Installed on the derrick guide rails, it moves up and down with the traveling block. Moving away from the intermittent operation mode of the traditional rotary table, it maintains continuous rotation and mud circulation even during tripping and making connections, greatly improving drilling efficiency and reducing the risk of stuck pipe. It is well suited to deep, ultra-deep, and complex-formation drilling, featuring high torque, precise speed control, and a high degree of automation.
2. Rotary Table: The core rotary equipment of conventional rigs. Installed at the center of the rig floor, it secures the kelly bushing (square kelly) through the master bushing and drives the drill string to rotate as a whole. Simple in structure and highly reliable, it is mostly used for conventional drilling in shallow and medium wells; today it is usually used in combination with the top drive, adapting to special downhole operation conditions.
3. Swivel: The key equipment connecting the top drive/drill string with the surface piping, and a sealing device that combines stationary and rotating parts. Its upper end connects to the fixed mud line, while its lower end rotates at high speed with the drill string. Under high-speed rotation it continuously seals the high-pressure drilling-fluid passage, ensuring drilling fluid is pumped downhole without interruption while isolating high-pressure fluid from leakage. It serves as the connecting core between the rotary system and the circulating system.
