Product Overview

The XHDD503C Cable Fault Pinpointer uses the acoustic and magnetic synchronization method to determine a power cable fault point. Electronic flashover is generated by the impact discharge generator, picked up and amplified by the corresponding probe, and the precise location of the fault point is determined by auditory and visual judgment. It is a device that completes the precise positioning of the cable fault point within the rough measurement range and collects the acoustic and magnetic time difference. It integrates positioning technology, path-assisted testing and other technologies, providing multiple test modes and rich, diverse prompt information to complete cable fault location efficiently and accurately.

This pinpointing instrument is suitable for low-resistance, short-circuit, open-circuit and disconnection faults of power cables, high-frequency coaxial cables, street light cables and buried wires of various materials, cross-sections and media, as well as high-resistance leakage and high-resistance flashover faults.

Working Principle

The device uses the acoustic-magnetic synchronization method to accurately determine the fault location. It is a very accurate and unique location method, based on the traditional acoustic pinpointing method with the added detection and application of electromagnetic signals.

When the high-voltage generator performs impact discharge on the faulty cable, the sound generated by the discharge at the fault point is transmitted to the ground. The sound signal is picked up by a highly sensitive probe; after amplification, a "pop" sound is heard through the headphones. The built-in probe receives the magnetic field signal in real time and, using the principle that the magnetic field propagates much faster than sound, determines the distance of the fault point by detecting the time difference between the electromagnetic signal and the sound signal. The sensor position is moved to find the point with the smallest acoustic-magnetic time difference, and the exact fault location is directly below it.

Traditional acoustic pinpointing instruments generally monitor only with earphones, or rely on meter-pointer swing to identify the discharge sound at the fault point. Since the discharge sound disappears in an instant and is not much different from the ambient noise, it often brings great difficulties to less experienced operators. The acoustic-magnetic synchronization method effectively avoids these problems of the traditional acoustic method.

操作界面及设置

The instrument is operated by touch screen or by the one-button adjustment control. The operation interface includes a waveform display area and a parameter adjustment area.

Magnetic field gain setting (1–8 levels) and magnetic field trigger setting (0–99 levels)
Sound gain setting (1–8 levels) and sound trigger setting (0–99 levels)
Probe indication; filter mode setting (all-pass, high-pass, low-pass and band-pass filtering)
Mute setting; BNR (background digital noise reduction) setting
Volume setting (0–16 levels; 8 levels recommended)
Battery power display, path indication, sound intensity, electromagnetic signal, magnetic field strength, four sets of acoustic-magnetic time-difference data (ms), and probe display

The sound channel filter has a factory default bandwidth of 100 Hz–1600 Hz. Appropriate filter parameters can be selected for different sites — for example, on hard pavement close to the fault point the high-pass filter preserves the high-frequency impact-discharge sound best, while further away or on soft soil or sand the low-pass filter is suitable. Bandpass filtering is a compromise between the two.

Note: when the four sets of collected data are below 30 ms for three consecutive times, the icon appears beside the electromagnetic signal, indicating that the fault point has been approached.

Usage Summary Wiring with the high-voltage generator

The acoustic and magnetic synchronization pinpointing requires a high-voltage impact signal generator working in a periodic discharge state. Wiring methods include the phase-to-armored method (preferred when there is phase-to-ground insulation damage, as discharge-sound attenuation is small), the phase-to-phase method (for a simple phase-to-phase fault without combined grounding), and the wiring method for a simple disconnection fault.

Selecting the pinpointing area

Before pinpointing, the cable path should first be clear; if drawings and data are incomplete, path detection should be carried out and marks made. Based on the distance-measurement results and considering the cable-head plate margin and terrain, the fault point location is roughly determined, generally within (distance-measurement value ± 50 m). After ensuring the fault point is penetrated and the discharge cycle of the high-voltage pulse generator is 3–5 seconds, start pinpointing directly above the cable in the selected area.

Pinpointing steps

Connect the probe sensor to the sensor jack and the earphone to the headphone jack. In the selected area, place the sensor flat on the ground directly above the cable, pointing in the direction of cable laying, and select the acoustic and magnetic synchronization mode. Observe the waveform and listen with the headphones to start pinpointing. A recommended starting principle is low threshold, large gain and high volume. After hearing the sound and seeing both the sound waveform and the magnetic field waveform, move the sensing probe about every 1–2 m and monitor more than 2 discharge cycles at each point. Keep moving forward until the sound or waveform can no longer be heard or seen and the time difference value changes from large to small and then to large; then go back and re-point. When re-pointing, increase the threshold, reduce the gain and lower the volume, find the point where the sound and waveform are the largest and the point where the time difference is the smallest — the coincidence of the two points is the fault point.

Precautions & Common Faults
When battery power is below 20% the interface displays a lightning symbol and the instrument needs charging; a fully discharged battery takes about 4 hours to charge fully. The red charger light means charging and the green light means charging is complete.
The probe is a sensitive component and must not be disassembled.
If the instrument fails, send it to the original factory for repair; do not disassemble it at will.
Do not use corrosive solvents (such as chemical solvents or alcohol) to wipe the LCD; use a semi-dry, fiber-free cloth soaked in warm water and then a dry microfiber cloth.
Try not to place the sensor on the cable body for pinpointing, as a weak popping sound heard at any position of the cable is electrical-stress vibration and cannot be used for pinpointing.
If no magnetic field signal can be tested, check battery power, the magnetic field channel gain setting, the cable between the host and the probe, and turn on the waveform display.
If there is no sound from the earphones when the probe is fixed or tapped, check battery power, the sound channel gain setting, and the cable between the host and probe.
Who It Is For

The XHDD503C is a path-assisted, acoustic-magnetic pinpointing instrument for networks whose cable route is uncertain or undocumented. It is built for crews who must confirm the cable path and then pinpoint the fault in the same job — old or poorly recorded networks, mixed buried lines, and sites where the drawings and route data are incomplete, so the operator needs path-deviation indication together with the acoustic-magnetic time difference to close in on the point.

Fault-locating crews working on old or poorly documented cable networks where the route itself must be re-confirmed on site.
Teams combining path-assisted detection with acoustic-magnetic pinpointing in a single pass over the cable.
High-frequency coaxial cable, street light cable and buried-wire specialists working with various materials, cross-sections and media.
Operators who want the instrument to automatically calculate the acoustic-magnetic time difference so the point can be judged repeatably.
Field crews that must find the strongest sound and waveform point together with the smallest time-difference point to confirm the fault location.
FAQ

Q1. What does the XHDD503C do?
It is a cable fault pinpointer that uses the acoustic and magnetic synchronization method to determine a power cable fault point. Electronic flashover is generated by an impact discharge generator and picked up and amplified by the probe, and the point is located precisely by auditory and visual judgment within the rough-measurement range, while also collecting the acoustic and magnetic time difference.

Q2. Which faults and cables is it suitable for?
It suits low-resistance, short-circuit, open-circuit and disconnection faults of power cables, high-frequency coaxial cables, street light cables and buried wires of various materials, cross-sections and media, as well as high-resistance leakage and high-resistance flashover faults.

Q3. How does the acoustic-magnetic synchronization method work?
It is based on the traditional acoustic method with added electromagnetic-signal detection. The discharge sound reaches the ground and is picked up by the probe, while the built-in probe receives the magnetic field signal in real time. Because the magnetic field propagates much faster than sound, the distance of the fault point is determined from the time difference between the two signals; the point with the smallest time difference is directly above the fault.

Q4. What accuracy and working conditions can be expected?
Acoustic-magnetic positioning accuracy is less than 0.1 m and path identification accuracy is less than 0.5 m. It runs on 4 × 18650 standard lithium batteries with more than 8 hours of standby, at −25 °C to 65 °C and relative humidity ≤ 90%, and the sensors are waterproof to IP65.

Q5. What must be noted, and what is included?
Charge the instrument when battery power is below 20% (about 4 hours for a full charge); do not disassemble the probe or the instrument; clean the LCD only with a semi-dry fiber-free cloth; and avoid placing the sensor on the cable body. The package includes the cable fault locator, headphones, probe (with connecting rod, probe head and three claws), 7-core signal line, charger and a multifunctional flower wrench, with a one-year free warranty and lifetime maintenance and technical service
