The Portable Surge Arrester Monitor Calibrator is a dedicated field instrument developed to address the demands of DC-type arrester monitors used in power systems, such as the Model JCQ(WZ)-16 series. The calibrator works by injecting a standard sine wave current signal into the current loop of the on-line arrester monitor, and comparing the value displayed by the monitor with the known output of the calibrator to verify measurement accuracy. For the action counter, the calibrator generates an instantaneous inrush current of 50A to 100A together with a DC inrush voltage of 1500V or 1800V, which triggers the counting mechanism of the monitor, and the action count is verified in a cyclic 1-2 second rhythm. Because the output current range is customizable from 0-5mA to 30mA, one instrument can calibrate monitors of different models and rated currents. The whole verification process can be carried out on site with the built-in battery, which makes the calibrator especially suitable for thunderstorm-season pre-checks and annual preventive maintenance of 1000kV-class arrester monitors.
