How the Oscillating Wave Method Works

The XHOW560 does not energize the cable with a fixed-voltage surge. It reproduces the cable’s real operating stress using a damped AC oscillating wave, then listens for the discharge signature of an insulation defect. The test cycle is straightforward:

Series connection & charging: a hollow inductor is connected in series with the cable under test, and a high-voltage DC source charges the series circuit to a preset voltage.
Oscillation generation: when the charging voltage reaches the set point, a high-speed electronic switch closes across the supply, forming a damped oscillating circuit that produces a decaying AC voltage at 20Hz-850Hz—close to the cable’s real service condition.
Partial discharge excitation: the oscillating voltage stresses insulation defects and triggers partial discharge inside the cable, which the coupling capacitor and PD sensor capture.
Precise location: the built-in software uses the pulse reflection method to calculate the defect position, giving ±0.1m positioning accuracy and a positioning error of only 1% of cable length.
