Plastic CNC Machining for Custom ABS Electronic Housing Parts

This plastic CNC machining project involved a large ABS housing cover for a household electronic product. The customer required approximately 50 parts for product development and low-volume use before committing to production tooling.

Each cover measures approximately 280 × 280 × 30 mm. Although the overall shape is a relatively simple circular panel, the internal side contains a combination of perimeter walls, reinforcing ribs, locating posts, raised bosses and rectangular openings.

The parts were CNC machined from ABS according to the customer's CAD data, with critical dimensions controlled to ±0.1 mm.

For this project, the manufacturing focus was not extremely tight tolerance. It was producing the large, relatively thin housing together with its smaller internal assembly features consistently across the 50-piece batch.

Project Details

Most of the Important Features Are Inside the Cover

Looking at the outside diameter alone, this appears to be a straightforward round plastic cover. The internal side tells a different story.

A raised wall follows the outer circumference, with multiple ribs and small features positioned around it. Several locating posts extend from the main panel, while a larger raised boss near the center contains two rectangular openings.

There is also a separate rectangular opening through the base panel.

These internal features may be used to locate, support or provide clearance for components in the final electronic assembly. Their exact functions are defined by the customer's design.

For machining, this means the part cannot be treated simply as a 280 mm plastic disc. The smaller internal features and their positions relative to the main housing also need to follow the drawing.

Machining a Large ABS Cover Without Molding Tooling

At approximately 50 pieces, the customer chose CNC machining ABS plastic rather than opening an injection mold.

This provides a direct manufacturing route from the CAD model to finished housing parts.

It is particularly useful when the customer needs physical components for assembly builds, functional evaluation, design verification or low-volume production, but does not yet require injection-molded quantities.

There is another practical advantage during product development.

If an internal post, opening or mounting feature needs to be changed, the CAD model and machining program can be revised without modifying an injection mold.

For engineering teams still validating a product, that flexibility can be more valuable than committing too early to production tooling.

Large Diameter, Relatively Thin Structure

The size of the part creates a different machining consideration.

At approximately 280 mm across but only 30 mm high, the housing has a large footprint compared with its thickness. As material is removed, broad plastic sections can become less rigid than a smaller solid CNC component.

Workholding therefore matters.

The part needs sufficient support during machining without excessive clamping force on relatively thin areas. The machining sequence also needs to consider the remaining material around the main panel and outer wall.

This is one of the reasons plastic CNC machining requires a different approach from simply applying metal-machining parameters to a plastic workpiece.

Small Ribs and Posts Need Suitable Tool Access

The internal ribs and locating posts introduce another consideration: cutter size.

A larger tool can remove material efficiently from open areas, but it may not reach narrow spaces between smaller internal features.

Local areas around ribs, posts and raised bosses may therefore require smaller cutting tools.

The goal is to machine these details without damaging adjacent features while maintaining the dimensions required for assembly.

For this project, the specified ±0.1 mm critical dimensions are appropriate to the functional requirements of the housing.

Rather than chasing unnecessarily tight tolerances across the entire component, machining attention can be focused on the features that actually influence fit and assembly.

Why CNC Works Well for This 50-Piece ABS Housing

This project also illustrates an important point about selecting a manufacturing process.

Quantity alone does not determine whether a plastic part should be CNC machined, vacuum cast or injection molded. Geometry matters as well.

For example, a housing covered with very fine molded textures may be better suited to vacuum casting at similar quantities because machining every texture individually can be inefficient.

This ABS cover is different.

Its main requirements are internal ribs, posts, openings, perimeter geometry and functional dimensions—features that can be produced directly through CNC machining.

For approximately 50 parts, CNC therefore provides a practical balance between manufacturing flexibility and avoiding production tooling.

ABS is commonly selected for electronic housings because it machines well and offers useful impact resistance for functional parts.

CNC machined ABS housings can help engineering teams evaluate:
