A flap turnstile, also known as a flap barrier, is an electronic access control gate that uses retractable or swinging panels (flaps) to manage pedestrian flow. These systems are primarily designed to allow only one person to pass through at a time, preventing unauthorized entry and "tailgating"

How It Works 

The system integrates with an access control system to ensure only authorized individuals pass through. 

1.  Authentication: A user presents their credentials (e.g., RFID card, QR code, biometric scan, or facial recognition) to a reader on the turnstile.

2.  Verification: The access control system instantly verifies the credentials.  

3.  Flap Activation: •  Access Granted: The horizontal flaps quickly and automatically retract into the housing, creating a clear pathway for one person.  

                                 •  Access Denied: The flaps remain closed and may trigger a visual or audible alarm.    

4.  Anti-Tailgating: The turnstile is equipped with sensitive infrared sensors that actively monitor the passage. These sensors ensure only one person passes per successful authentication, instantly attempting to close the flaps and trigger an alarm if a second person tries to "tailgate" (follow too closely).  

5.  Reset: Once the authorized person has cleared the passage, the flaps automatically close to prepare for the next user.  

6.  Emergency: In the event of a power failure or emergency (like a fire alarm), the flaps are designed to automatically open for free passage, meeting fire safety regulations.

Flap vs. Swing Turnstiles

A flap turnstile is often compared to a swing turnstile (or speed gate), which uses a swinging glass panel (like a door) instead of a retractable one.
