Overview

Titanium coil springs are high-performance elastic components made from titanium alloys (such as Ti-6Al-4V). Leveraging the low density, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance of these alloys, they are widely used in sectors such as aerospace, medical devices, and high-end sports equipment. Compared to traditional steel springs, titanium springs offer a weight reduction of over 40% while maintaining superior fatigue life and resilience; they are particularly well-suited for applications demanding significant weight reduction and corrosion resistance, such as aircraft landing gear, artificial joint implants, and deep-sea exploration equipment.

  • Ultra-high specific strength: For the same elasticity and dimensions, titanium springs weigh 35%–45% less than stainless steel springs, offering significant weight reduction.
  • Excellent fatigue resistance: High creep resistance ensures the spring does not easily undergo permanent deformation during repeated high-frequency expansion and contraction; elasticity degradation is minimal during long-term cyclic use, making it ideal for high-frequency reciprocating applications.
  • Low elastic modulus: Greater deformation occurs under the same load, allowing for softer springs with longer travel and fewer coils, offering greater flexibility in structural design.
  • Superior corrosion resistance: Resistant to acids, alkalis, seawater, moisture, and chloride ion corrosion; less prone to galvanic corrosion when paired with dissimilar metals, making it suitable for multi-metal assemblies.
  • Excellent high- and low-temperature performance: Capable of long-term operation at 300°C and short-term exposure to 450°C without oxidation failure; does not become brittle in cryogenic environments as low as -200°C, with no significant decline in mechanical properties.
  • Non-magnetic material: Generates no magnetic interference, making it suitable for applications requiring non-magnetic components, such as medical MRI equipment, precision electronics, radar systems, and surveying instruments.
  • Excellent biocompatibility: Non-toxic and free from metal ion leaching; does not trigger immune rejection and is safe for long-term contact with human tissues and bodily fluids.

  3. Motorsport: By reducing unsprung mass and sporting inertia through lightweight design, the Grade 5 titanium spring significantly improves suspension response speed and engine high-rev performance, mainly used in top-tier competition vehicles.
  4. Marine Engineering: Relying on outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion and stress cracking, it ensures that underwater robots, sonar release mechanisms, and other devices operate maintenance-free for long periods in deep-sea environments.
  5. High-end industry: Titanium alloy springs are suitable for extreme conditions requiring severe corrosion, high temperatures, or complete magnetic interference, such as chemical valves, deep-sea drilling equipment, and elastic components in precision electronic instruments.

Processing

(1) Raw material preparation: Usually cold-drawn titanium alloy wire (AMS 4928/4979 standard) is used, with no cracks on the surface.

(2) Coiling and Molding: Cold coils are suitable for small springs with a wire diameter ≤3mm, requiring multiple passes with small deformation for winding; When the wire diameter > 3mm, use it in a protective atmosphere or vacuum furnace to prevent oxidation and hydrogen absorption.

(3) Heat treatment: Stress-relief annealing is performed between each process to eliminate work hardening and prevent cracking. For ultra-high strength requirements, solution + aging treatment can be selected.

(4) Surface treatment: Depending on the actual application, choose shot peening strengthening, friction-reducing coatings, or pickling passivation.

(5) Quality control: such as mechanical properties, metallographic inspection, non-destructive testing, appearance inspection, and dimensional accuracy checks; only qualified products can be shipped from the factory.
