Stainless steel pipe is a hollow, longitudinal steel section with an economical round shape. Widely used in oil, chemical, medical, food, light industry, equipment, apparatus, and structural applications. Stainless steel pipes are categorized into seamless and welded types with various manufacturing methods:
Seamless Hot Rolling: Round Pipe Billet → Heating → Perforation → Three Roll Skew Rolling/Continuous Rolling/Extrusion → Off Pipe → Sizing → Cooling → Billet → Straightening → Water Pressure Test → Marking → Storage
Seamless Cold Rolling (Cold drawn): Round Pipe Billet → Heating → Perforation → Head → Annealing → Pickling → Oil (Copper) → Multi Pass Drawing → Billet → Heat Treatment → Straightening → Water Pressure Test → Marking → Storage
Longitudinal Welding (Straight seam welding): Including ERW and EFW processes
Industry Standards & Applications
ASTM A312: For high temperature and general corrosive applications. Used in sulfuric acid storage tanks, phosphate fertilizer industries, fluorosilicic acid reactors, phosphoric acid plants, chlorate crystallizers, pharmaceutical ventilation systems, solvent recovery filters, pulp and paper bleaching equipment, offshore platform pipelines, desalination systems, and seawater condensers.
ASTM A213: Seamless ferritic carbon steel and austenitic alloy stainless steel tubes for boilers, superheaters, and heat-exchangers.
ASTM A269: Stainless steel tubes for common applications in seamless and welded forms.
ASME SB677: Covers UNS N08904 (904L), UNS N08925, UNS N08926 (alloy 926) in seamless, cold-drawn, and hot-finished steel pipes for extremely corrosive services, including 6% molybdenum alloy stainless seamless pipes.
ASTM A789/ASME SA789: Seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing for general services, including duplex stainless steel tube materials with specified heat treatment requirements.
ASTM A790/ASME SA790: Seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipe with good resistance to stress corrosion cracking, intended for general corrosive services.
