443 stainless steel is a ferritic alloy composed primarily of chromium and titanium, with extremely low carbon content. This combination provides exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly against moisture and salt exposure. While most ferritic alloys typically offer less durability than austenitic varieties, the high chromium content in 443 stainless steel delivers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel.
Compared to 304 stainless, 443 exhibits reduced thermal expansion, resulting in less stress and warping under heat. The material's magnetic properties, derived from its high chromium content, do not indicate inferior quality—chromium remains one of the most corrosion-resistant metals available.
As a newer ferritic stainless steel, 443 offers excellent rust resistance and good formability through reduced carbon content and increased chromium with titanium additions. These properties approximate those of 304 grade stainless steel, making 443 a cost-effective alternative in numerous applications.
