A carrier tape pocket should correspond to the actual dimensions and shape of the component rather than simply providing an empty cavity.
Important design considerations can include:
Component length and width
Component height
Loading orientation
Pocket clearance
Pocket depth
Pocket pitch
Pickup position
Cover tape sealing area
Sprocket-hole arrangement
Reel winding requirements
For irregular or non-standard components, additional pocket features can be incorporated into the design. Industry carrier-tape manufacturers also use complex pocket geometries such as supports, tapers and relief features when conventional cavities are insufficient.
A typical tape-and-reel packaging system consists of three main elements:
