A carbide insert wears predictably. Every cut dulls it slightly, cutting forces climb, surface finish degrades, and eventually the operator indexes or replaces it. This cycle is so routine that most shops plan production around it.
PCD breaks that cycle. Not by fighting wear — but by being fundamentally harder than the abrasive mechanism trying to attack it. In aluminum, plastics, and fiber composites, the diamond edge simply doesn't participate in the wear process the way carbide does. The tool change interval stops being a daily rhythm and becomes a monthly event.
The Heat Dynamic Reversed
Standard tooling logic: cutting generates friction → friction generates
heat → heat softens the tool → the softened tool generates more friction. This feedback loop is what kills cutting edges in high-speed, continuous-cut operations.
PCD's thermal behavior inverts this dynamic. Diamond conducts heat roughly five times more efficiently than tungsten carbide. Instead of accumulating at the tool tip, thermal energy transfers into the chip and exits with it. The tool stays cooler. The cutting parameters stay stable. The loop breaks.
