Silicon carbide, given the chemical formula SiC, is made with quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (salt is added for the production of green silicon carbide) and other raw materials. The silicon carbide is smelted in a resistance furnace, heated at a high temperature. It is also called electrolon sand or refractory sand.
Silicon carbide is divided into two kinds: black and green, which are both hexagonal crystal structures. The specific gravity of silicon carbide is 3.20 to 3.25g/cm3 and it has a Mohs hardness of 9.5.
Black silicon carbide is an abrasive material noted for its hardness, sharpness and durability. With good thermal conductivity, high-temperature strength and low thermal expansion, it stands out for its unique crystal structure, which prevents it from wear and deformation.
Moreover, black silicon carbide has high chemical stability, making it the ideal choice for harsh chemical environments. It is widely used in many industrial applications with great success.
This SiC has a purity level over 98.6%. There's a very low Fe2O3 content of 0.37%. The colour of this SiC is black, with a Mohs hardness of 9.3 and a true density of 3.20 to 3.25g/cm3. Additionally, the bulk density of this SiC ranges from 1.20 to 1.6g/cm3.
