OV5640 is a low-voltage, high-performance, 1/4-inch 5-megapixel CMOS image sensor launched by OmniVision. It uses OmniBSI™ technology to provide all the functions of a single-chip 5-megapixel (2592×1944) camera in a small package. It is controlled through the serial camera control bus (SCCB) interface and provides 8-bit/10-bit images in various formats of full frame, sub-sampling, windowing or arbitrary scaling.
The image array of OV5640 runs at up to 30 frames per second (fps) with a resolution of 5 million pixels. Users can fully control image quality, format and output data transmission. All necessary image processing functions, including exposure control, gamma correction, white balance, color saturation, hue control, defective pixel elimination, noise reduction, etc., can be programmed through the SCCB interface or embedded microcontroller. OV5640 also has a built-in compression engine to enhance processing capabilities. Additionally, Omnivision image sensors utilize proprietary sensor technology to improve image quality by reducing or eliminating common sources of lighting/power image contamination (e.g., fixed pattern noise, smearing, etc.), resulting in crisp, fully stabilized color images.
