Application and Characteristics of Plastic Materials in Beer Machine Accessories

• Food-grade Silicone / Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE/TPR)
   
  • Applications: beer tubing, sealing gaskets, valve cores, O-rings, quick-connect seals
  • Characteristics: high elasticity, alcohol and carbonation resistance, non-toxic and odorless, easy to clean, autoclavable; reliable sealing, compatible with metal connectors, solving corrosion and residue issues of metals.
   
• Polypropylene (PP) / High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
   
  • Applications: dispenser housings, valve handles, spear covers, filter support frames
  • Characteristics: acid and alkali resistance, impact resistance, low cost, injection moldable; ideal for structural parts not in direct contact with beer.
   

2. Beer Storage and Containers (Barrels / Tanks / Jugs)

• HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
   
  • Applications: disposable/reusable plastic beer barrels, fermenters, storage tanks
  • Characteristics: food-grade, impact-resistant, chemical-resistant, lightweight (≈1/8 the weight of stainless steel), shatterproof, easy to handle; suitable for household and small-scale craft brewing, can be designed for pressure-resistant structures.
   
• PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
   
  • Applications: transparent beer pitchers, portable barrels, observation windows
  • Characteristics: high transparency, oxygen barrier, leakproof, lightweight, low cost; convenient for observing beer status, suitable for short-term storage and display.
   
• Polycarbonate (PC)
   
  • Applications: high-transparency beer pitchers, impact-resistant containers
  • Characteristics: glass-like transparency, shatterproof, high temperature resistance; replaces glass for commercial and outdoor use.
   

3. Dispensing and Operating Components

• ABS / Modified PP
   
  • Applications: beer tap housings, handles, buttons, control panels
  • Characteristics: high rigidity, glossy surface, easy coloring, wear-resistant; improves appearance and handfeel with controllable cost.
   
• Nylon (PA) / POM (Polyoxymethylene)
   
  • Applications: gears, sliders, valve seats, quick-connect buckles
  • Characteristics: high strength, wear resistance, self-lubrication, dimensional stability; ensures service life and smooth operation.
   

4. Cooling and Insulation Systems

• Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) / Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
  • Applications: beer machine insulation layers, cooling module housings, ice buckets
  • Characteristics: lightweight, thermal insulation, cushioning, low temperature resistance; reduces energy consumption and protects internal components.

II. Core Characteristics of Plastics in Beer Machines

1. Food Contact Safety (Primary Requirement)

• All use FDA / EU food-grade certified materials, non-toxic, odorless, no harmful substances precipitated, complying with beer hygiene standards.
• Smooth surface resists fouling and is easy to clean and disinfect, reducing microbial growth.

2. Chemical and Environmental Resistance

• Resistant to alcohol, carbon dioxide, weak acids and alkalis, cleaning and disinfecting agents; no corrosion or swelling during long-term use.
• Adaptable to normal working conditions of 0–60°C; some high-temperature resistant materials can be steam-sterilized.

3. Lightweight and Economy

• Density is only 1/6–1/8 of metals, greatly reducing overall weight and transportation costs.
• High efficiency in injection/blow molding with low mold cost, suitable for mass production, lower overall cost than metal parts.

4. Design and Processing Advantages

• Strong plasticity, can integrally form complex structures (sealing grooves, buckles, flow channels), reducing assembly steps.
• Customizable in transparent/translucent/colored forms for observation, identification and appearance needs.

5. Performance Limitations (Notes for Selection)

• Low heat resistance: most plastics <100°C, not suitable for long-term high-temperature sterilization/boiling (except silicone).
• Limited pressure resistance: HDPE/PET barrels withstand approx. 0.5–1MPa, metal reinforcement required for high-pressure applications.
• Weak aging/UV resistance: easy to become brittle after long-term outdoor use.
• Poor thermal conductivity: not suitable for direct contact with core heat exchange surfaces of cooling or heating systems.

1. Direct beer contact: prioritize food-grade silicone, HDPE, PP, PET for non-toxicity and corrosion resistance.
2. Sealing and elasticity: must use silicone / TPE for long-term sealing and anti-aging performance.
3. Structural and load-bearing parts: choose nylon, POM, modified PP for strength and wear resistance.
4. Transparent observation: select PC, PET, acrylic for transparency and shatterproof performance.
5. Maintenance: avoid high-temperature boiling, strong acids and alkalis, and UV exposure for plastic parts to extend service life.
