Compatibility & Replacement

Original-System Compatibility
Used with INFI 90/Harmony rack controllers, commonly an IMMFP01/02/03, and normally paired with an IMFCS01 frequency counter for turbine governor applications. Manufacturer documentation lists NTHS03, NIDI01/NTDI01, NKAS02 and NKHS03 among the associated termination and cable hardware.

Historical Replacement
ABB identifies SPHSS13 as the direct replacement for IMHSS03. Even for a direct replacement, verify the installed LVDT type, coil current, termination, cable set, controller firmware and function-code configuration before work.

Applications & Fault Scenarios
Steam-turbine throttle and control valves, gas-turbine fuel valves, inlet guide vanes and nozzle-angle positioning.
Closed-loop hydraulic actuator positioning with AC or DC LVDT feedback and servo-valve or I/H drive.
Maintenance searches commonly follow LVDT excitation loss, missing secondary feedback, coil open/short conditions, actuator drift, hard-manual transfer or controller communication faults.
A servo-loop failure can force a valve to manual or trip strategy and may stop a turbine or keep it unavailable after an outage.

Redundancy & Control
The redundant servo outputs may operate as two active outputs or in an active/standby arrangement.
A short or open circuit on one protected servo output does not affect the other output.
Automatic demodulator-gain features support AC and DC LVDT applications; the configured actuator and feedback topology must be preserved during replacement.

Diagnostics & Maintenance
Offline firmware diagnostics use the front LEDs for pass/fail and test identification. Do not place a live control loop into diagnostic mode without an approved outage procedure.
Manufacturer checks include memory, communication and feedback functions; loss of LVDT primary voltage below the documented threshold or missing secondary feedback can indicate a loop fault.
Remove dust every three months, inspect signal, power, ground and connectors every 12 months, and calibrate the LVDT/actuator loop as required. Complete all items during a shutdown when possible.
01How should IMHSS03 be installed in a turbine-control loop?
Record the function-code data, coil-current range, LVDT wiring, termination, cable positions and calibration before removal. Install only under an approved turbine outage or bypass procedure and complete a controlled valve-stroke test before service.
02Can SPHSS13 replace IMHSS03 directly?
ABB identifies it as the direct successor. The engineering team should still verify controller firmware, function code, LVDT arrangement, servo-coil current, cable and termination details before the exchange.
03What must be configured on IMHSS03?

Use grounded ESD controls and antistatic packaging. Follow the cabinet cleaning and annual connection checks, and calibrate the LVDT/actuator loop when required. Offline diagnostics must only be run under a safe operating procedure.
