Industrial gaskets and vent components are fundamentally different from the thin, flexible vent patches used in electronics. A typical pipe flange gasket for a chemical plant is cut from a 3mm thick compressed fiber sheet reinforced with aramid fibers. A manway cover seal for a pressure vessel may be made from 6mm solid PTFE or graphite laminate. These materials are dense, tough, and highly abrasive to die blades. Cutting them requires immense force—often 50 to 150 tons per stroke—and the die must be robust enough to withstand the abrasive wear over thousands of cycles. Furthermore, these parts are often large, with diameters up to 1 meter or more, requiring a press with a correspondingly large platen and bed. A standard light-duty die cutting press used for films and foams would be destroyed by the forces and abrasive wear of these materials. The industrial gasket market requires a different class of machine altogether.
The heavy-duty hydraulic die cutting press is built like a structural steel fabrication. The frame is a fully welded and stress-relieved box or C-frame structure designed for a lifetime of high-tonnage cycling. The hydraulic cylinder is a large-bore, heavy-duty industrial cylinder with hardened chrome-plated rod and long-wearing seals. The hydraulic power unit is sized for the required stroke speed and includes oil cooling and filtration for continuous operation. The platen is a massive, precision-ground steel plate, often equipped with a heated platen option for cutting materials that benefit from thermal softening, such as thick rubber. The machine features a large bed area, often 1.5 x 2.0 meters or more, to accommodate large sheet materials and multi-cavity nesting of large gaskets. Safety is paramount: a two-hand anti-tie-down control system, light curtains, and a physical safety guard prevent operator access to the cutting zone during the stroke. The machine is designed for simple, robust operation with minimal electronics, making it maintainable in remote industrial locations.

The operator places a sheet of the thick material onto the cutting bed, positioning it against registration stops or under a laser guide. The heavy steel rule die, pre-loaded with ejection rubber, is placed on top of the material or mounted to the upper platen. The operator initiates the cycle using the two-hand controls. The massive hydraulic cylinder drives the platen downward with immense force. The sharp, heavy-gauge steel rule blades compress and shear through the thick material, cleanly cutting the gasket or vent component shape. The platen reaches the down-stop position, dwells briefly, and then rapidly retracts. The ejection rubber expands, pushing the cut parts out of the die. The operator removes the finished parts and the waste skeleton, then loads the next sheet.
