This EPTFE rugged handheld terminal speaker acoustic vent is built for the punishing conditions of warehouses, freight yards, cold storage facilities, and factory floors. Industrial handheld terminals, barcode scanners, and logistics PDAs require loud, clear audio for scan confirmations and voice prompts while being subjected to high-pressure washdowns, dust, diesel fumes, and frequent drops. The vent combines a heavy-duty EPTFE membrane with a 304 stainless steel mesh backing, creating a composite that withstands both high-velocity water jets (IP69K compatible) and physical abuse. It handles speaker sound pressure levels exceeding 120 dB without mechanical fatigue, ensuring the device’s beeps, alerts, and voice guidance remain intelligible even in noisy environments. The stainless steel mesh provides puncture resistance against sharp tools and fork tines, while the EPTFE layer guarantees water and dust tightness. The assembly is rated for operation from sub-zero freezer temperatures to foundry-floor heat, making it a truly all-environment solution.

Solution

Rugged terminals are often cleaned with pressure washers and disinfectants at the end of a shift. Standard speaker protection fails quickly under these conditions: foam absorbs water and freezes, mesh rusts, and both allow water ingress that corrodes the speaker. This EPTFE-and-steel composite creates a lasting waterproof seal that also acts as a physical armor. It eliminates speaker failure as a field return driver and allows devices to meet enterprise IP68 and even IP69K standards. The result is lower total cost of ownership for fleet operators and higher productivity, as workers can rely on audible signals without error.

How It Works

Sound from the internal speaker passes through the composite layers. The EPTFE seals against water and fine dust, while the steel mesh takes the brunt of physical impact and prevents sharp objects from penetrating. High-pressure water jets spray against the steel surface; any mist that passes the mesh is instantly stopped by the hydrophobic EPTFE. The large open area of the steel mesh ensures it does not add significant acoustic resistance, so the EPTFE alone determines the acoustic tuning. The vent also provides pressure equalization to prevent housing deformation during thermal cycling.

FAQ
Q1: Can the terminal survive being dropped into a puddle?
A: Yes. The vent is rated for continuous immersion at 2 meters for 60 minutes. The terminal’s other seals must be of equivalent standard for full device protection.
Q2: Does the stainless steel mesh ever rust?
A: The mesh is grade 304 stainless, which resists corrosion in most industrial environments. After 1000 hours of salt spray testing, it remains free of red rust. For extreme marine environments, a 316L mesh option is available.
Q3: Will the vent affect the maximum alert volume?
A: The attenuation is less than 3 dB, which is just noticeable. The speaker drive level can be slightly increased to compensate if needed, but most industrial terminals already produce excess SPL margin.
