Cause

Herbicide and pesticide drums are filled with chemically aggressive, often volatile, formulations. Temperature swings during ocean freight can create enormous pressure differentials that cause drums to bulge, distort, or split at the seams. Solvent-based concentrates produce high vapor pressures that can blow out gaskets in unvented closures. When an operator unscrews the bung of an over-pressurized drum, the sudden release can spray hazardous liquid. Conversely, a vacuum-locked drum is difficult to pump and can collapse. Drums that leak or fail in transit contaminate shipping containers and trigger costly clean-up and regulatory incidents.

Solution

By integrating the D17 vent into the drum's cap or lid, manufacturers provide a dedicated, high-flow breathing path that keeps internal pressure balanced at all times. The vent's advanced ePTFE membrane, featuring a permanent oleophobic treatment, resists penetration by even low-surface-tension herbicide solvents like xylene and aromatic naphtha. How It Works

The D17 vent leverages the exceptional properties of expanded PTFE. The membrane’s structure is a network of nodes and fibrils forming a highly porous yet extremely tortuous path. Herbicide vapors and expanding air find their way through this path to the outside. Liquid herbicides, however, despite their low surface tension due to added surfactants and solvents, are physically rejected by the membrane’s ultralow surface energy. The vent’s large 17mm diameter provides the membrane area needed for high-volume breathing, rapidly equalizing the large headspace of a drum during thermal cycling or pump dispensing.
