Oleophobic Acoustic Vent For Hearing Aids – Sweatproof & Sound Transparent

Product Overview

The oleophobic acoustic vent for hearing aids is an ultra-miniature, medical-grade acoustic protection component engineered for the most personal and demanding wearable audio device. This vent features an extremely thin ePTFE acoustic membrane—down to 10 microns thickness—with a specialized, biocompatible oleophobic treatment, bonded to a skin-safe micro-adhesive carrier. It is designed to protect the miniature balanced armature receiver and MEMS microphones in behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE), and receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids from the relentless onslaught of earwax, sweat, skin oils, and moisture. The vent provides acoustically transparent sound transmission for clear speech intelligibility and natural sound quality, while blocking the contaminants that are the single largest cause of hearing aid failure and return for repair. It enables hearing aid manufacturers to deliver devices that sound better for longer, with dramatically reduced in-warranty service costs.

Cause

Hearing aids operate in the warm, humid, oily, and waxy environment of the ear canal or its immediate vicinity. Earwax (cerumen) is continuously produced and migrates outward, directly entering the receiver port and microphone openings. Sweat from physical activity or hot weather carries salt and skin oils into the device. Sebum, the skin's natural oil, coats every surface. In a RIC hearing aid, the receiver sits deep in the ear canal; wax, moisture, and oil have a direct path into the receiver nozzle. In a BTE device, the microphones and receiver ports are exposed to side-of-head sweat and hair product residues. Earwax and oil that enter the receiver clog the acoustic pathway, causing reduced volume, distorted sound, and shifted frequency response. Moisture corrodes the delicate receiver armature and the MEMS microphone diaphragm. These contamination failures account for a majority of hearing aid repairs. The end-user—often an older adult—is frustrated by a device that gradually becomes quiet and unclear, requiring professional cleaning or replacement. An acoustic vent that blocks wax and moisture while being acoustically invisible is the key to improving user satisfaction and reducing warranty costs.

Solution

The oleophobic acoustic vent provides a microscopic shield that protects the hearing aid's acoustic transducers without adding any perceptible change to the sound quality. The ePTFE membrane, as thin as 10-15 microns, has an extremely low acoustic mass, resulting in insertion loss of less than 1 dB at 1 kHz—essentially transparent to the hearing aid's audio path. The membrane's pore structure physically blocks earwax particles, skin debris, and liquid sweat and moisture. The oleophobic treatment is critical: it prevents the skin oils and sebum that have extremely low surface tension from wetting the membrane surface and clogging the pores over time. The vent is die-cut to microscopic dimensions—as small as 1.0 mm diameter—to fit on the nozzle of a RIC receiver or over the microphone port of a BTE device. The adhesive is medical-grade, biocompatible, and tested for prolonged indirect skin contact.

Application
  • RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) hearing aid receiver nozzle protection

  • BTE (Behind-the-Ear) hearing aid microphone port protection

  • ITE (In-the-Ear) and CIC (Completely-in-Canal) receiver and microphone vents

  • Hearing aid earhook and tubing acoustic dampers

  • Cochlear implant sound processor microphone ports

  • Personal sound amplification product (PSAP) acoustic ports

  • Hearing aid charging case vents

How It Works

The vent is applied directly over the receiver nozzle or microphone port during hearing aid assembly. Sound from the balanced armature receiver passes through the ePTFE membrane with virtually no loss of energy. The membrane's thin, lightweight structure moves with the sound pressure waves, adding no audible coloration, distortion, or delay. Earwax migrating toward the receiver encounters the membrane and is physically blocked. Sweat and skin oils contact the oleophobic surface and are repelled, preventing any liquid penetration or surface wetting. The membrane allows the small pressure equalization needed for the receiver diaphragm to move freely, maintaining the intended bass response. Because the vent is so thin and acoustically transparent, the hearing aid's factory-programmed frequency response and gain settings require no adjustment.

How To Choose
  1. Determine the hearing aid style (RIC, BTE, ITE, CIC) and the specific acoustic port to be protected—receiver nozzle or microphone port.

  2. Measure the available diameter for vent placement on the receiver nozzle or housing.

  3. Select the membrane thickness based on acoustic priority: thinnest (10 μm) for absolute acoustic transparency; slightly thicker (20 μm) for enhanced wax and moisture protection.

  4. Confirm the adhesive's biocompatibility requirements and skin contact classification per ISO 10993.

  5. Test with the complete hearing aid: measure frequency response, maximum output, and total harmonic distortion before and after vent application, and after accelerated wax and moisture exposure.

FAQ
  • Q: Will the vent affect the hearing aid's high-frequency response, which is critical for speech intelligibility?
A: The vent is engineered for flat frequency response across the speech band. High-frequency extension is preserved; insertion loss at 4-8 kHz is typically less than 2 dB.

  • Q: How long will the vent last before it needs to be replaced due to earwax buildup?
A: The vent significantly extends the interval between professional cleanings. Earwax accumulates on the external surface of the vent rather than inside the receiver. The hearing care professional can clean or replace the vent during a routine appointment.

  • Q: Can the vent be applied by a hearing aid dispenser, or is it factory-installed?
A: Both options are available. We provide vents in formats suitable for factory automated assembly and for manual application by hearing care professionals during fitting or servicing.

  • Q: Is the vent compatible with the anti-feedback and noise reduction algorithms in modern hearing aids?
A: Yes, the vent's acoustic transparency ensures that the hearing aid's DSP algorithms receive the same acoustic input as an unprotected receiver or microphone, maintaining their intended performance.

  • Q: Does the vent affect the venting path for pressure equalization in occluded ear canals?
A: The acoustic vent protects the receiver nozzle, not the ear canal pressure vent. It does not affect the deliberate acoustic venting designed into the hearing aid shell or ear mold.
