Demister Pad Description
Demister Pad Features
1. High Void Volume
Standard pads feature a voidage of 97% to 99%. This ensures that the gas flow is largely unobstructed, maintaining a very low pressure drop—a critical factor in distillation where pressure stability affects the boiling points of the chemicals being separated.
2. Structural Rigidity
SS304 is a robust material that maintains its shape and density even under the constant thermal cycling and physical stress of a high-pressure distillation environment.
3. Cost-to-Performance Ratio
While materials like SS316 or Monel are used for highly corrosive acids, SS304 offers the best balance of corrosion resistance and affordability for:
Crude oil atmospheric distillation.
Alcohol and ethanol purification.
Organic solvent recovery.
General chemical fractionation.
4. Custom Geometry
For distillation towers, which can range from small diameters to several meters, SS304 pads are highly adaptable:
Sectional Design: Large pads are made in "manway-sized" blocks for easy installation through the tower's access ports.
Variable Densities: The mesh can be knitted more or less densely depending on whether the target is "standard" separation or "fine" mist removal.
Demister Pad Application
1. Improving Product Purity
The demister pad is installed above the top tray or packing section. It captures heavy liquid droplets that would otherwise contaminate the "overhead" (the distilled product), ensuring the final output meets high purity standards.
2. Increasing Throughput
By effectively managing entrainment, the tower can operate at higher vapor velocities. This allows for a greater volume of gas to pass through the column without "flooding" the system, effectively increasing the overall production capacity of the tower.
3. Protecting Downstream Condensers
Unwanted liquid droplets in the vapor stream can cause scaling, fouling, or corrosion in the overhead condensers and heat exchangers. The SS304 pad acts as a final barrier to protect this expensive equipment.
