OSU Heat Release Rate Tester for Aircraft Materials
The OSU Rate of Heat Release Apparatus is an essential testing instrument for evaluating the fire resistance of aircraft interior materials. This equipment strictly complies with U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations 14 CFR Part 25.853(d) and Appendix F Part IV, as well as Chapter 5 of the FAA Aircraft Materials Fire Test Handbook. Developed by Ohio State University, this instrument simulates real aircraft cabin fire conditions using a radiant heat flux of 35 kW/m² to test heat release rates of large-area cabin materials.
The system accurately measures peak heat release rate (≤65 kW/m²) and total heat release over 2 minutes (≤65 kW*min/m²), known in the industry as the "65/65" standard. This enables material suppliers and aircraft manufacturers to ensure their products meet FAA certification requirements, significantly enhancing aircraft cabin fire safety.
