1. Infrared Light Source: The NDIR analyzer incorporates an infrared light source, typically an infrared LED or a heated filament. The light source emits infrared radiation, which consists of a range of wavelengths.


2. Gas Sample Introduction: The gas sample to be analyzed is introduced into a sample cell or gas chamber. The gas chamber allows the infrared light to pass through the sample.


3. Optical Filters: The NDIR analyzer utilizes optical filters that are specifically designed to transmit infrared wavelengths that correspond to the absorption bands of the target gas. These filters help isolate the desired wavelengths and filter out other wavelengths that could interfere with the measurement.


4. Gas Absorption: When the infrared light passes through the gas sample, the target gas molecules present in the sample absorb specific wavelengths of the infrared light. The absorption occurs due to the unique molecular structure of the target gas.


5. Detector: On the other side of the gas chamber, a detector is placed to measure the intensity of the transmitted infrared light. The detector is typically a thermopile or pyroelectric sensor. It converts the incoming infrared radiation into an electrical signal.


6. Reference Channel: To compensate for variations in the light source intensity and other interferences, NDIR analyzers often include a reference channel. The reference channel measures the background or reference signal, which represents the unabsorbed infrared light. It serves as a baseline for comparison with the signal from the gas sample.


7. Signal Analysis: The electrical signals from the detector and the reference channel are processed and analyzed by the analyzer's electronics. The analyzer calculates the difference between the reference signal and the signal from the gas sample, which corresponds to the absorbed infrared light. This difference is proportional to the concentration of the target gas in the sample.


8. Calibration and Concentration Determination: NDIR analyzers are calibrated using known gas standards to establish a calibration curve or relationship between the measured signal and gas concentration. By correlating the measured signal with the calibration curve, the analyzer determines the concentration of the target gas in the gas sample.


9. Display and Output: The determined gas concentration is typically displayed on the analyzer's screen or outputted as a digital reading. Some analyzers also offer data logging capabilities to record and store measurement data for further analysis or reporting.


The accuracy and performance of an NDIR analyzer depend on proper calibration, maintenance, and periodic verification against certified gas standards. The analyzer can be optimized for specific gases or gas families by selecting appropriate filters, light sources, and calibration procedures.
