The length of the gas chamber is optimized to ensure sufficient interaction between the gas molecules and the infrared light.


3. Optical Filters: NDIR analyzers incorporate optical filters to selectively transmit the infrared wavelengths that are absorbed by the target gas. The filters help to eliminate other wavelengths of infrared light that could interfere with the measurement. The selection of appropriate filters depends on the specific gas being analyzed.


4. Detector: On the opposite side of the gas chamber, a detector is placed to measure the intensity of the transmitted infrared light. The detector is typically a thermopile or a pyroelectric sensor that converts the infrared radiation into an electrical signal. The signal is proportional to the intensity of the transmitted light, which is affected by the absorption of the target gas in the sample.


5. Reference Channel: To compensate for changes in the light source intensity and other interferences, NDIR analyzers often include a reference channel. The reference channel measures the background or reference signal, which represents the unabsorbed infrared light. By comparing the reference signal with the signal from the gas sample, the analyzer can accurately determine the gas concentration.


6. Signal Processing and Analysis: The electrical signals from the detector and reference channel are processed and analyzed by the instrument's electronics. The analyzer applies calibration factors and algorithms to calculate the gas concentration based on the measured signals. The concentration is displayed on the analyzer's screen or transmitted to an external system for further analysis and recording.


NDIR gas analyzers offer several advantages, including high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. They can measure gas concentrations ranging from percent levels down to parts per million (ppm) or even parts per billion (ppb). NDIR analyzers are commonly used for the analysis of gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and various hydrocarbons.
