While the casting solidifies and cools within the mold cavity, the aluminum at the sprue remains liquid, creating an ideal temperature gradient ("higher at the sprue, lower in the cavity"). This ensures that during solidification shrinkage, liquid aluminum can continuously flow from the sprue bush to feed the mold cavity.
Reducing or Even Eliminating Feeders, Improving Material Utilization
By effectively keeping the feeding channel open, internal shrinkage porosity defects in the casting are significantly reduced. More importantly, process engineers can greatly reduce the size of feeders, and in some processes, even achieve feeder-less casting.
