The Solcon RVS-DN is a heavy duty, advanced solid-state soft starter (RVSS) rated from 17 to 3,300 A on a main voltage range of 230 V to 1,200 V. It is engineered to operate under severe conditions and to start the most demanding applications — Solcon specifically positions it for marine and mining installations, where vibration, humidity, corrosive atmosphere and generator-based power supplies are routine. Over 25 years of field reliability sit behind the design.

The unit delivers soft, stepless acceleration and deceleration, with a feature set that goes well beyond basic voltage ramping: current limiting, torque and current control, a dedicated pump control program, dual adjustment characteristics, slow speed with electronic reverse, and pulse (kick) start for high-friction loads. Firing angle triggering is automatic, which matters in marine, offshore and generator operation where supply voltage and frequency are unstable. Frequency tracking spans 45-65 Hz automatically.

What sets the RVS-DN apart is its built-in enhanced motor protection package — one of the most comprehensive in the industry, covering stall, jam, overload, phase loss, phase sequence, under/over frequency, under/over voltage, load loss, shorted SCR and starter over-temperature, with the option of motor insulation testing and motor thermistor input. Q2. Why would I not need a bypass contactor?

The RVS-DN is rated for continuous operation without a bypass contactor up to 820 A at 122 °F (50 °C). In that range the thyristors carry the running current directly, so you save the contactor itself, the panel space it occupies, and the wiring and maintenance that go with it. Above 820 A, a bypass contactor is required — or you can order option 9 "Preparation for Bypass", in which case all protections remain active.

Q3. What is inside-delta connection, and why does it matter?

Inside-delta (also called 6-cable) connection opens the motor winding delta point and inserts the starter into each phase winding, so the same starter frame can drive a larger motor than in line (3-cable) connection. The RVS-DN supports inside-delta connection up to 690 V. It requires a motor with all six winding ends brought out.

Q4. Can it run on a generator supply?

Yes — and this is a specific design strength. Older diesel generator sets, especially those with low-cost voltage regulators, produce unstable voltage and frequency that cause irregular SCR firing. The RVS-DN has automatic firing angle triggering that overcomes this voltage and frequency instability, which is why Solcon positions it for marine, offshore and generator operation.

Q5. How do I select the right rating?

RVS-DN covers 17-3,300 A at 230-1,200 V. To select correctly we need: (1) motor nameplate data (power, current, voltage, poles, efficiency, power factor); (2) load type (pump, conveyor, compressor, fan, ball mill, mixer); (3) the torque-versus-speed load curve; (4) load inertia; (5) supply voltage and frequency; (6) starts per hour; (7) whether line or inside-delta connection will be used; (8) ambient temperature; (9) any required options (Modbus, Profibus, marine approval, UL version, remote display, conformal coating).
