A thickener is a solid-liquid separation device based on gravity sedimentation. Typically constructed as a cylindrical shallow tank with a conical bottom, thickeners use materials such as concrete, wood, or welded metal plates for structural integrity.
This equipment processes ore pulp with 10%~20% solid content, transforming it into underflow ore pulp with 45%~55% solid content through gravity sedimentation. A slowly rotating rake mechanism (1/3~1/5 r/min) facilitates the discharge of thickened underflow from the bottom outlet.
Thickeners are extensively utilized in cyanidation plants for leaching and washing operations, serving multiple functions including thickening, washing, and buffering.
Driving Mechanism Classification
Thickeners are categorized by driving mechanism into center-driven and peripheral-driven types. Center-driven thickeners are specified by tank inner diameter, while peripheral-driven units are measured by annular track diameter.
Structural Components
The center-driven thickener comprises three primary components: annular tank, rake mechanism, and driving system. The tank features a gently inclined conical bottom with a 6°~12° slope, typically constructed from concrete or steel plates for smaller diameters.
A circular overflow launder positioned along the upper inner wall manages overflow discharge. The central vertical shaft connects to the rake mechanism, which consists of cross-arranged rake arms, rake teeth, and reinforcement bracing. Rake teeth are installed at approximately 30° angles to ensure comprehensive product discharge.
Industrial Applications
Thickeners serve critical roles in facilities requiring solid-liquid enrichment and separation, including hydrometallurgy plants, mineral processing operations, and chemical processing facilities. Standard diameters range from 3m to 100m, with depths varying from 2m to 4m.

Pre-Flocculant Era: Large footprint requirements with low sedimentation efficiency
Early Flocculant Integration: Reduced footprint with accelerated sedimentation rates
High-Efficiency Thickeners: Fundamental sedimentation principle changes yielding significantly smaller footprints
Thickeners are primarily categorized by driving mechanism:
Center-Driven Type: Typically features diameters under 24 meters
Peripheral Roller-Driven Type: Common for medium to large-scale applications with diameters around 53 meters (up to 100 meters)
Peripheral Rack-Driven Type: Generally exceeds 53 meters diameter, currently limited in application
