Micro-Bubble Air Flotation Machine for Hospital Wastewater Processing
Product Overview

The dissolved air flotation unit is a highly efficient water-treatment system widely used for industrial wastewater, municipal sewage, hospital wastewater, and other treatment applications.

Its principal advantage is the rapid separation of solids and liquids by means of fine air bubbles. These bubbles attach to suspended particles and reduce their apparent density, causing the particles to rise to the water surface for removal.

The flotation process is particularly suitable for fine impurities whose specific gravity is close to that of water and which are therefore difficult to separate by natural settling or flotation under their own weight.

Applications

In water-supply and wastewater-treatment pretreatment processes, most suspended contaminants are relatively light, except for raw water containing large amounts of sand and wastewater with a high concentration of heavy mechanical impurities.

Typical contaminants suitable for air-flotation treatment include:
  • Algae found in lakes, reservoirs, and certain rivers
  • Plant residues and fine colloidal impurities
  • Dye particles from the textile dyeing and printing industry
  • Short fibers from the papermaking and chemical-fiber industries
  • Fine oil droplets and organic solvents from petroleum refining and chemical production
  • Heavy-metal contaminants in electroplating and acid-pickling wastewater
  • Electrophoretic-paint wastewater
  • Other lightweight particles with a specific gravity close to that of water

Conventional sedimentation generally performs poorly when treating these contaminants. The problem becomes more pronounced under low-temperature winter conditions, when coagulation performance and hydraulic conditions deteriorate.

Attempting to force difficult-to-settle flocs downward by gravity alone is inefficient. Air-flotation technology instead introduces fine bubbles into the water. The bubbles adhere to the flocs, significantly reducing their overall density. The buoyancy and upward velocity of the bubbles then carry the flocs rapidly to the water surface, achieving efficient solid-liquid separation.

In this respect, air-flotation technology represents a major development beyond conventional gravity sedimentation and has opened up a broader field of solid-liquid separation applications.

Main Advantages
Efficient Removal of Suspended Solids and Colloidal Matter
Microbubble attachment:
The system generates fine bubbles with diameters of approximately 20-50 μm. These bubbles attach effectively to oils, suspended solids (SS), colloids, and other low-density contaminants in the wastewater, allowing removal efficiencies of more than 90% under suitable operating conditions.

Wide range of applications:
The equipment is particularly suitable for treating:

  • Oily wastewater from restaurants, food-processing plants, and slaughterhouses
  • Fiber-containing wastewater from paper mills
  • Algae-contaminated water in lakes, ponds, and landscape-water systems
Rapid Treatment and Compact Footprint
Rapid solid-liquid separation:
Compared with conventional sedimentation, air flotation requires a shorter hydraulic retention time, normally around 15-30 minutes. It provides high treatment efficiency and is suitable for applications involving large flow rates or limited installation space.

Compact design:
The modular structure can reduce the required footprint by approximately 30%-50% compared with conventional treatment systems, making it particularly suitable for expansion and upgrading projects at hospitals, factories, and existing wastewater treatment facilities.

Flexible Operation and High Degree of Automation

Adjustable operating parameters:
The air-bubble production rate, recycle ratio, chemical dosage, and other operating parameters can be adjusted according to real-time water-quality conditions. This allows the system to accommodate variations in influent quality, including seasonal fluctuations in hospital wastewater.

Intelligent control:
An integrated PLC control system can automatically regulate chemical dosing, including PAC and PAM addition, as well as air-bubble generation, thereby reducing the need for manual operation.

Higher Sludge Concentration and Lower Subsequent Treatment Costs

Reduced sludge-treatment load:
The floated sludge generally has a moisture content of approximately 95%-97%, which is lower than that of many conventional sedimentation sludges. It is therefore easier to thicken and dewater, helping to reduce subsequent sludge-handling costs.

Resource recovery:
Separated oils, fats, fibers, and other recoverable materials may be collected for reuse or further processing. For example, recovered fats and oils may be used as raw materials for biodiesel production where technically and economically feasible.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Low energy consumption:
The stated energy consumption is approximately 0.1-0.3 kWh/m³, providing relatively low operating costs compared with energy-intensive separation processes such as centrifugal separation.

Reduced chemical consumption:
The flotation effect produced by fine bubbles can improve solid-liquid separation and may reduce the required dosage of coagulants and flocculants, thereby lowering operating costs and reducing the risk of secondary pollution.

Application in Medical Wastewater Treatment

Air-flotation equipment can be particularly useful in medical wastewater treatment because it can remove suspended materials that may carry microorganisms, including blood residues, tissue fragments, oils, and other particulate matter.

However, air flotation is a pretreatment or separation process and cannot replace disinfection. A subsequent disinfection process, such as ozone, ultraviolet irradiation, or chemical disinfection, must be provided to ensure that the final effluent meets the applicable hygiene and discharge requirements.

When selecting the equipment, the following factors should be considered:
  • Wastewater pH and temperature
  • Influent suspended solids and oil concentration
  • Required treatment capacity
  • Recycle ratio and dissolved-air pressure
  • Type of bubble-generation system
  • Dissolved-air pump system or pressurized saturation vessel
  • Chemical dosing requirements
  • Applicable effluent discharge standard
