1. Product Overview
Nomay Metal Detectable PTFE Tape combines a non-stick PTFE working surface, an integrated metal layer and single-sided silicone adhesive.
Also known as Metal Detectable Heat Sealer Tape or PTFE Aluminum Foil Tape, it supports application-specific inspection of detached tape fragments on packaging lines. X-Ray Detectable PTFE Tape is a related selection term where X-ray performance has been validated.
The metal layer provides a detection opportunity; it does not prevent wear or guarantee identification of every fragment.
2. Product Construction
Option 1: PTFE-coated aluminum foil without fiberglass reinforcement.
Option 2: PTFE-coated fiberglass/aluminum composite.
Adhesive: Silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Adhesive side: Single-sided.
Colors: Metallic, brown or blue, subject to construction.
Release formats: Self-wound or liner-backed.
Converted forms: Rolls, sheets, strips and die-cut parts.
The detectable layer remains in the installed tape. A removable liner does not supply the detection function.
Each backing option requires its own layer, thickness and performance specification.
3. Backing & Adhesive System
The fiberglass-free aluminum version avoids glass reinforcement and can change heat transfer compared with conventional PTFE glass cloth.
The fiberglass/aluminum composite adds textile reinforcement, with performance depending on laminate integrity and construction.
Silicone adhesive attaches the tape to compatible prepared surfaces. The metal layer is electrically conductive and must be considered around heating elements and contacts.
PTFE coating, adhesive or fiberglass fragments without enough retained metal may not be detectable.
4. Available Specifications
Series: NM-PTFE-MD.
Surface: PTFE.
Detectable material: Integrated aluminum.
Adhesive: Silicone.
Adhesive side: Single-sided.
Comparable aluminum-only total thickness: Approximately 0.14 mm, excluding liner.
Composite thickness and individual layers: Confirm separately.
Width and roll length: Specified to order.
Colors and liner: Confirm by selected grade.
Formats: Finished rolls, slit rolls, sheets, patches and die-cut covers.
Master-roll availability and tolerances: Confirm by construction.
Detection threshold: Established through production-line validation.
Final specification must be confirmed for the selected Nomay model. Aluminum-only references do not apply automatically to fiberglass composites.
5. Key Features & Buyer Benefits
• Metal-containing fragments can be included in a validated inspection program.
• PTFE helps reduce film sticking.
• Low friction supports suitable equipment contact surfaces.
• Backing options address fiber and reinforcement requirements.
• Converted covers support repeatable maintenance.
• Aluminum changes heat-transfer behavior for process evaluation.
• Blue can assist visual contrast where the surroundings make it useful.
6. Application Procedure
Step 1 — Identify the sealer, substrate, packaged product, inspection location and foreign-body target.
Step 2 — Select backing, metal layer, adhesive, thickness, dimensions, color and liner.
Step 3 — Define thermal cycle, pressure, electrical clearance and inspection requirements, including target fragment dimensions.
Step 4 — Prepare covers and representative challenge fragments, including relevant wear or delamination forms.
Step 5 — Install on clean, dry surfaces without wrinkles or exposed hazardous edges. Follow the equipment's electrical-insulation design.
Step 6 — Validate sealing performance and separately verify detection and rejection under actual product, packaging, speed and equipment settings.
7. Application Industries
• Food manufacturing and packaging.
• Bakery, snack and confectionery packaging.
• Meat, dairy, frozen-food and ready-meal packaging.
• Pharmaceutical and medical packaging equipment.
• Flexible packaging and bag making.
• Equipment maintenance.
• Precision tape converting.
8. Application Scenarios / Problems Solved
Detached Sealer Covers
A metal-containing fragment may be detectable after leaving a worn cover. Confirm fragment size, orientation and position. Coating-only debris may not carry sufficient metal.
Film Sticking
Use PTFE on suitable jaws to reduce buildup and improve release. Confirm temperature, dwell, pressure and film. Release performance does not establish package integrity.
Inspection with Difficult Products
Wet, salty, dense or foil-packaged products can affect inspection. Validate the actual metal detector or X-ray system; one system's success does not prove the other's.
Precision Maintenance
Die-cut covers reduce dimensional variation. Confirm installation, liner release and inspection requirements after changing the construction.
Heat-Transfer Changes
Aluminum can alter the heating response. Reassess seal settings and quality rather than assuming a faster or cooler process is automatically acceptable.
9. Performance & Operating Conditions
Detection
Test realistic fragments by size, orientation, location and retained metal content. Verify both detection and reject response. Revalidate after changes in tape, package, product or inspection setup.
Temperature
A comparable aluminum-only construction is published at -73°C to 260°C. This is a reference, not a verified Nomay rating. Confirm duration, pressure and cycling separately.
Electrical and Mechanical Performance
Maintain required electrical protection. Inspect for foil cracking, delamination, coating loss and lifting.
Food Contact and Removal
Detectability is separate from food-contact suitability. Removal and residue depend on service conditions and adhesive aging.
10. Comparison & Selection Guide
Choose detectable tape when the inspection program specifically addresses tape fragments.
Choose fiberglass-free aluminum where avoiding glass reinforcement is important.
Choose reinforced composite where its verified mechanical performance is needed.
Choose self-wound rolls for direct installation or liner-backed parts for precision conversion.
Select metal detection and X-ray based on validated performance, not the product name alone.
11. Important Selection Notes + Technical Notes / FAQ
A. Important Selection Notes
• There is no universal minimum detectable fragment size.
• Metal detection and X-ray require separate validation.
• Fragments without sufficient metal may be missed.
• Conductive metal is not electrical insulation.
• Reference ratings are not Nomay guarantees.
• Food-contact and medical requirements need separate confirmation.
B. Technical Notes / FAQ
Will every metal detector detect the tape?
No. Equipment, product and fragment conditions determine performance.
Does X-ray always detect aluminum fragments?
No. Validate material amount, orientation and surrounding product.
Does the liner provide detectability?
No. The detectable layer remains in the installed tape.
Can it replace an ordinary PTFE cover directly?
Recheck heat transfer, electrical clearances, sealing and detection.
Can custom covers be supplied?
Yes, subject to construction and drawing confirmation.
12. Inquiry Requirements / Request a Quote
