Oil casing pipe is a large-diameter steel pipe used to support the walls of oil and gas wells after drilling is complete. Unlike tubing or drill pipe — which can be retrieved and reused — casing is a permanent, single-use material. It is run into the borehole and cemented in place to provide long-term structural integrity. In fact, casing accounts for more than 70% of all oil well pipe consumption, making it the single largest tubular component in any well construction program.
Once the casing is cemented, it stabilises the wellbore, isolates different underground formations, prevents the well from collapsing, and creates a secure pathway for drilling mud circulation during drilling and for production tubing during the later life of the well.
Oil casing serves multiple critical functions throughout the life of a well:
Wellbore stability – Prevents the hole from caving in, especially when drilling through unconsolidated or fractured formations.
Formation isolation – Seals off different pressure zones, salt layers, unstable shales, and high-pressure pockets, preventing cross-flow between formations.
Groundwater protection – Isolates freshwater aquifers from produced fluids and drilling muds, a key environmental safety requirement.
Pressure containment – Provides a high-pressure barrier for blowout preventer (BOP) systems and well-control equipment.
Production conduit – The production casing string houses the tubing through which oil and gas flow to the surface.
Oil and gas wells typically use multiple concentric casing strings, each with a specific function, size, and depth range. The exact number of strings depends on well depth, geological conditions, and regulatory requirements.

Casing Type |
Typical OD (inches) |
Function |
|
Conductor Casing |
20″ – 36″ |
Prevents washout near the surface, supports the wellhead, isolates very shallow formations |
|
Surface Casing |
9⅝″ – 20″ |
Protects freshwater zones, supports the BOP stack, provides the first pressure seal |
|
Intermediate Casing |
7″ – 16″ |
Seals off abnormal pressure zones, prevents lost circulation, isolates problem formations (salt, unstable shales) |
|
Production Casing |
4½″ – 9⅝″ |
Carries produced fluids to surface, hosts the tubing string, must withstand full well life loads |
|
Liner (tie-back) |
4½″ – 7″ |
Hung from intermediate casing; reduces weight and cost; may be extended to surface |
Selection note: Conductor and surface casing strings are typically J55 or K55 grade. Production casing for deeper wells uses N80, P110, or Q125. For wells containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), always specify L80 or higher sour-service grades.

High-CO₂ + H₂S environments |
Critical safety note: J55, N80, and P110 are NOT suitable for sour service (H₂S present). They lack the required hardness control and will fail by sulfide stress cracking (SSC). If H₂S partial pressure exceeds 0.05 bar, always specify L80-1 or higher sour-service grades.
API 5CT casing connections are critical to sealing performance, load capacity, and well integrity. Here is how the standard options compare:
|
Connection |
Full Name |
Key Features |
Best Application |
|
STC |
Short Thread & Coupling |
8 round threads per inch; shorter, lighter connection |
Shallow wells, lowload applications, costsensitive projects |
|
LTC |
Long Thread & Coupling |
Same thread profile as STC but longer coupling for more engaged threads |
Mediumdepth wells, higher tensile loads, general casing service |
|
BTC |
Buttress Thread & Coupling |
Square/trapezoidal thread profile; high axial load capacity |
Deep wells, high-pressure environments, maximum tensile strength |
Beyond API standard threads, premium connections (such as VAM®, VAM TOP®, NEW VAM, and TPCO proprietary designs) offer enhanced performance:
Metal-to-metal seal for superior gas tightness
Reverse angle torque shoulder for precise make-up control
Higher torque capacity for deviated and horizontal wells
ISO 13679 CAL-IV qualification for critical service
Recommended for HPHT wells, gas wells, and sour service

Selecting casing requires balancing well design parameters with budget and availability. Use this checklist:
Well depth and pressure – Deeper, higher-pressure wells require higher strength grades (P110, Q125, V150).
Corrosive environment – Determine whether H₂S (sour) or CO₂ (sweet) is present.
H₂S (sour): L80-1 minimum; C90 or T95 for deeper sour wells.
CO₂ (sweet): 13Cr grades for moderate CO₂; consider duplex stainless for severe CO₂.
Both H₂S and CO₂: Premium connections + CRA (corrosion-resistant alloy) grades.
Connection type – STC for shallow, low-load wells; LTC for general service; BTC for deep/high-load wells; premium connections for HPHT, gas wells, or deviated holes.
Product Specification Level (PSL) – API 5CT defines PSL-1 (standard) and PSL-2 (tougher chemistry, impact testing, NDT). PSL-2 is typically required for sour service, offshore, and critical wells, but adds 5–15% to cost.
Length range – R3 (longest) minimizes the number of connections per well but requires larger handling and transport equipment. R1 and R2 are more common for most drilling programs.
End finish – Specify threaded and coupled (T&C) with coupling, or plain end with bevel for welding.
