The CTB series high-capacity wet drum magnetic separator is engineered for large-scale iron ore beneficiation operations processing hematite, magnetite, and mixed iron ore types. Designed specifically to meet the demanding throughput requirements of Brazil’s Carajás (Pará) and Iron Quadrangle (Minas Gerais) mining regions, this equipment delivers processing capacities of 50-280 TPH while maintaining industry-leading magnetic recovery efficiency with energy consumption as low as 0.1-0.3 kWh per ton of feed. The permanent magnet drum design eliminates the need for electromagnet excitation power, contributing to both operational cost savings and reduced carbon footprint in alignment with IBAMA environmental approval requirements.

The CTB magnetic separator operates on the principle of wet low-intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), where finely ground ore slurry is introduced to the magnetized drum surface rotating within a stainless steel tank. Paramagnetic iron mineral particles are attracted to the drum surface by the internal NdFeB permanent magnet assembly and carried out of the slurry stream to the concentrate discharge point, while non-magnetic gangue minerals remain in suspension and are discharged as tailings. The semi-countercurrent tank configuration, standard for most iron ore applications, optimizes the balance between concentrate grade and iron recovery by allowing multiple particle-bath contacts within the separation zone. The magnetic field intensity is factory-configurable from 1500 to 6000 Gauss through adjustment of the magnet assembly pole pitch and magnet grade selection, accommodating ore-specific requirements from weakly magnetic hematite to strongly magnetic magnetite.

Unlike electromagnetic separators, the permanent magnet design requires zero excitation power, eliminating coil cooling systems and associated maintenance while achieving 40-60% lower energy consumption per ton processed.
  • Tropical Climate Corrosion Resistance: All components in contact with slurry feature 304 or 316L stainless steel construction, and the structural frame receives a three-layer marine-grade epoxy coating system tested to 2,000 hours salt spray resistance (ASTM B117). Motor enclosures are rated IP65 or higher for reliable operation in the high-humidity, 30-35°C ambient conditions typical of Pará tropical rainforest mining environments.
  • Adjustable Magnetic Field Configuration: The magnet assembly pole pitch can be factory-configured to optimize field gradient for specific iron mineral types. Narrower pole pitch generates higher field gradients for weakly magnetic hematite and limonite recovery, while wider pitch produces deeper field penetration for coarse magnetite concentration.
  • VFD Drum Speed Control: The variable frequency drive enables drum rotation speed adjustment from 15 to 25 r/min, allowing operators to optimize the balance between concentrate grade and recovery rate without mechanical modifications. Lower speeds improve concentrate quality while higher speeds maximize recovery for scavenger applications.
  • Low Maintenance Tank Design: The semi-countercurrent tank features a replaceable wear liner system that protects the tank bottom from abrasive wear. The tank overflow weir is height-adjustable for slurry level control, and the concentrate and tailings discharge chutes are lined with replaceable ceramic or polyurethane wear tiles for extended service intervals exceeding 12,000 operating hours.

Applications

The CTB wet drum magnetic separator is optimized for large-scale iron ore beneficiation in tropical and sub-tropical mining environments. Primary applications include magnetite concentration in the Carajás iron ore district where high-grade magnetite ores require single-stage LIMS to produce direct-shipping-grade concentrates exceeding 65% Fe. For hematite and itabirite ore types characteristic of the Iron Quadrangle in Minas Gerais, the CTB separator is deployed as the primary concentration stage following grinding and classification, producing a magnetic pre-concentrate that is further upgraded through flotation or gravity separation. The equipment is equally effective in dense medium recovery circuits where the magnetic separator recovers ferrosilicon or magnetite medium from coal and mineral processing dense medium circuits. Additional applications include ilmenite and beach sand mineral processing, chromite beneficiation, and manganese ore upgrading where magnetic property differences enable effective separation. The IP65 motor protection and corrosion-resistant materials make the CTB series particularly suitable for the high-rainfall, high-humidity operating conditions of Brazil’s Pará state tropical mining operations.

Packaging & Quality Assurance

Each CTB magnetic separator undergoes comprehensive factory testing including magnetic field mapping across the full drum surface using calibrated Hall effect gaussmeters, dynamic balancing of the drum assembly to G2.5 grade (ISO 1940), tank water-tightness testing, and a minimum 4-hour continuous run test. All test data is documented in a factory acceptance test report provided to the buyer. The equipment is shipped with the magnetic drum assembly in a moisture-barrier sealed crate, stainless steel tank in a separate reinforced export packaging, motor and gearbox in individual boxes, and the VFD control panel vacuum-sealed. Installation supervision, magnetic field verification, and performance commissioning are provided by our engineering team at the buyer’s site. A 12-month warranty covers manufacturing defects on all components from the date of commissioning.
