Medical diagnostic equipment often requires physical enclosure prototypes before the housing design is released for production. Engineers need to verify more than the overall shape—they may also need to check display openings, control interfaces, ventilation features, mounting points, internal clearance, and assembly with other components.
For this European project, YS Precision manufactured approximately 20 medical device enclosure prototypes using vacuum casting.
The housing features a large central interface opening, a dense ventilation area, multiple functional holes and slots, and several mounting details around the enclosure. The parts were produced in PC-like polyurethane resin, then surface-prepared and painted according to the customer's requirements.
The finished housings were shipped to Europe for engineering and product evaluation.

The key challenge of this enclosure is the number of functional features integrated into the front housing.
A large central opening occupies much of the component, while ventilation slots, smaller holes, control openings, and mounting features are positioned around it. These details need to correspond with the components installed inside or behind the enclosure.
A physical medical device housing prototype can help engineers evaluate:
This makes the prototype useful for mechanical integration and assembly verification, rather than only visual presentation.
The customer required approximately 20 housings for the development stage. Production injection tooling was not yet necessary because the enclosure still needed physical evaluation.
We therefore selected vacuum casting for low-volume plastic parts.
An accurate master pattern was prepared first, followed by silicone tooling. The required housings were then reproduced in PC-like polyurethane resin.
For this project, vacuum casting offered several advantages:
The process was selected based on quantity, geometry, material, interface requirements, and development stage, rather than quantity alone.
A PC-like polyurethane resin was selected for these prototype housings.
This type of material can provide useful rigidity, toughness, and surface quality for applications such as medical device enclosures, diagnostic equipment housings, laboratory equipment covers, and other rigid plastic prototypes.
For this project, the parts were intended for:
fit checking → assembly evaluation → dimensional review → handling assessment → appearance verification
PC-like polyurethane is not the same as production polycarbonate.
If a medical device project needs to validate specific production-material properties—such as flame rating, sterilization compatibility, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, or long-term thermal performance—the material and manufacturing process should be reviewed separately.
For prototype development, material selection should follow what the engineering team needs to verify.
Because this component is part of the visible exterior of the diagnostic equipment, surface quality was also important.
After vacuum casting, the housings were trimmed, smoothed, and prepared for painting.
Particular attention was required around the large interface opening, ventilation pattern, smaller holes, and enclosure edges so that surface finishing would improve appearance without obscuring important details.
The painted housings allowed the customer to evaluate both mechanical integration and exterior design before committing to production tooling.
Different development stages may require different manufacturing methods.
CNC machining can be appropriate when only a few parts are required, tighter machined tolerances are needed, or the actual engineering plastic must be used.
Vacuum casting is often suitable for low-volume enclosure prototypes when multiple similar parts are needed for fit, assembly, and design evaluation.
Prototype injection molding becomes more relevant when the design is stable and production-grade thermoplastics or molded-part characteristics need to be tested.
For engineering and purchasing teams, selecting the right process can help balance prototype cost, material requirements, lead time, and tooling investment.
