After casting, forging or 3D printing, every knee implant component carries flash, riser gates, support structures and sharp edges. That material has to come off — and in a regulated industry, how it comes off is as critical as the part itself.
Manual grinding introduces exactly what a medical device manufacturer cannot accept: inconsistent depth, operator-dependent results, and uncontrolled sub-surface damage. Our robotic grinding machine removes material with constant force feedback and adaptive path control, producing a documented, repeatable process that passes audit.

Knee implants are not mild steel. Two material families dominate, and each demands a different grinding strategy.
Controlling Sub-Surface Damage — The Medical Difference
For a load-bearing implant, grinding is not cosmetic. Over-aggressive material removal creates micro-cracks, residual stress and surface embrittlement — damage that can initiate fatigue failure inside the patient's joint.
Our cell is engineered around damage control: force-limited passes, controlled feed, and documented process windows that keep cutting depth inside the safe envelope for CoCrMo and titanium alloys.
Force Control for Thin-Wall Implant Geometry
Knee implant components are thin-wall by design. A rigid, blind path-grinding robot will punch through a 1.5 mm condyle wall before a human notices.
The force-controlled head reads contact force in real time and withdraws the moment resistance drops — grinding flash to zero without ever touching the parent material beyond spec.

Yes. The cell runs validated recipes per material family: CoCrMo flash/riser grinding and Ti-6Al-4V AM support removal use different force setpoints, tooling and dust handling — switchable by recipe without cross-contamination.
Q2. How do you control sub-surface damage on implant materials?
