The term autoclave refers to a sterilization device that operates as a high-pressure steam vessel. Its purpose is to eliminate all microorganisms, including their resistant spore forms, using moist heat. Standard operating parameters involve achieving a chamber temperature of at least 121°C (250°F) under 15-30 psi of pressure for a sustained period. The cycle is meticulously designed: an air removal phase, a sterilization hold phase, and a cooling/drying exhaust phase.
