The molybdenum-bearing 316L grade is commonly selected when pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance must be improved relative to 304 in many chloride-containing process environments. The low-carbon “L” grade is also useful when welded fabrication and sensitization control are relevant.
For strip components, corrosion performance also depends on crevices, surface condition, residual stress, fabrication, cleaning chemicals, chloride concentration and temperature. The grade name alone should not be used as a guarantee for marine or chemical service.
316L is not immune to seawater corrosion, chloride stress-corrosion cracking or highly aggressive reducing/oxidizing chemicals. For severe chloride service, duplex or higher-alloy materials may be necessary. Conversely, if the environment is mild and cost or magnetic behavior is dominant, 304 or 430 may be more appropriate.

1. Why choose 316L strip instead of 304?
316L generally provides improved resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion relative to 304 because of its alloying.
2. Is 316L completely resistant to seawater?
No. Sustained seawater and high-chloride service can still cause pitting, crevice corrosion and other damage.
3. What is the UNS number for 316L?
UNS S31603; the common European grade designation is 1.4404.
4. Can 316L be supplied BA finish?
Yes, BA can be quoted where the requested gauge and production route allow it.
5. Can 316L strip be precision slit?
Yes, custom slit widths, edge conditions and coil configuration can be specified.
6. Do I need PMI for 316L?
PMI can be useful for alloy verification where required, but the inspection plan should be matched to the customer’s specification and documentation requirements.
7. Can XRF alone distinguish 316 from 316L?
XRF does not reliably determine low carbon, so a full grade verification plan may require mill documentation and appropriate chemistry testing rather than XRF alone.

9. Can 316L be supplied in hard temper?
Cold-worked conditions can be discussed, but required mechanical properties and forming needs should be confirmed.
