301 is selected when the designer wants austenitic stainless steel that can achieve high strength through cold work. As the cold-worked temper increases, tensile strength and spring response rise, but available elongation and formability fall. That trade-off should be designed into the stamping sequence.
For spring or elastic parts, specifying only “301 full hard” may still be insufficient. The purchase order should identify the governing standard, thickness range, target hardness or mechanical properties, edge condition, burr and grain/rolling direction if it affects the part.
301 is not automatically the best grade for every corrosive environment. Its main advantage over 304 in this context is cold-work hardening response. If chloride pitting resistance is the primary concern, 316L may be more appropriate. If deep drawing is the priority, a softer condition or another grade may be better than highly cold-worked 301.
