304 is a broad-use austenitic stainless grade where buyers need a practical balance of formability, weldability and corrosion resistance for indoor, food-equipment, appliance and general industrial applications. The strip specification should still define surface and temper because these influence forming behavior and appearance.
For high-volume stamping, control of thickness, slit width, burr, camber and coil build may be as important as the 304 chemistry itself. BA is useful when a brighter smooth surface is required; 2B is a common cold-rolled finish for functional industrial parts.
304 should not be described as universally “marine grade.” In chloride-rich or aggressive chemical environments, 316L often offers better pitting resistance. For very high spring strength, 301 in an appropriate cold-worked temper may be a better starting point. Grade selection should follow corrosion, forming and strength requirements together.
