17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance.
Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi). The grade should not be used above 572°F (300°C) or at very low temperatures.

Alloy 17-4 PH provides superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For applications with stress corrosion cracking risks, aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended.
The alloy demonstrates excellent resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries, equivalent to 304L grade performance.
Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties with minimal distortion (0.10% shrinkage for H1150, 0.05% for H900).

|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ann | - | 36 | 1100 |

| Alternative Grade | Selection Considerations |
|---|---|
| 431 | Higher toughness than 17-4PH, better availability in some sizes |
| 416 | Free-machining martensitic stainless steel, better for repetition machining, lower cost |
| 316 | Higher corrosion resistance for severe environments, but with much lower strength |
| 2205 | Much better corrosion resistance with lower strength (not as low as 316) |
Welding: Grade 630 can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating requirements.
Machining: Best performed in solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
