SO2 Gas Manufacturing Plant via SO3 reduction

This gaseous SO2 production process incorporates the SO2 production unit as an add-on package of the sulfuric acid plant. It utilizes oleum and liquid sulfur supplied by the plant as raw materials. This method aims to ensure a stable stream of SO2 gas while minimizing the need for additional equipment.

 

Process Design
  • Raw Material Handling

These raw materials are sourced as follows:

Liquid sulfur - Solid sulfur is melted with steam in the sulfur melting section and then filtered to produce clean liquid sulfur;

Oleum -  Oleum tower

  • The Reaction Process

The reaction proceeds as follows:  

    2SO3+S=3SO2

Clean liquid sulfur is pumped to the reaction tank at the base of the oleum tower, where it reacts with oleum to produce SO2 gas.

SO2 gas, along with some SO3 gas, exits from the top of the reaction tank and enters the lower section of the SO3 scrubber tower. In the scrubber tower, 98% sulfuric acid cascades from the top, thoroughly contacting and absorbing the SO3 from the incoming gases. The remaining SO2 gas then passes through a fiber demister at the top of the scrubber tower and enters the solid sulfur reactor.

The solid sulfur reactor reduces any residual SO3 in the SO2 gas back to SO2.

 

The purified SO2 gas is then compressed and delivered to the users.
