Compression Spring Overview
Long compression springs (free length/OD >4) tend to buckle and bow sideways, typically requiring guide rods or sleeves. Our barrel-shaped springs—larger in the middle, smaller at ends—naturally resist buckling without additional guides. Custom middle/end OD, free length, and spring rate available. Ideal for long-stroke, non-guided mechanisms with 48-hour sampling.
Anti-Buckling Design Solution
Buckling is a common challenge in long-stroke compression spring design. When compressed, lateral forces cause the spring's middle section to bow outward, contacting housings or adjacent parts, increasing friction, causing noise, or even leading to spring fracture. Traditional solutions require adding guide rods or sleeves—adding cost and space.
Barrel-shaped springs (also called convex springs) solve this by altering the profile: largest diameter in the middle, smaller at ends. When compressed, the middle tends to expand outward, but because it already has the largest diameter, this creates a self-centering stabilizing moment that resists buckling. We design the optimal arc and taper ratio based on your spring's free length to mean diameter ratio. This method has been proven in long-stroke solenoids and auto-reset mechanisms—no guide needed for simplified design.
