Desilter is an essential piece of solids control equipment used in drilling operations. Positioned after the shale shaker and desander, the desilter removes finer particles from the drilling mud, ensuring optimal mud quality for the drilling process. Proper use of a desilter improves drilling mud purification, reduces wear on pumps and pipes, and enhances drilling efficiency.
Desilter operates based on hydrocyclone principles. Drilling mud enters the desilter under pressure, creating a vortex inside the hydrocyclone cone. Heavy solids are forced to the wall and discharged as underflow, while clean mud flows upward as overflow for recirculation.
