The Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) system merges the benefits of traditional activated sludge (AS) and fixed-film technologies, creating a hybrid process that enhances treatment efficiency and reduces operational challenges. In IFAS reactors, plastic or ceramic media (e.g., polyethylene carriers) are submerged in the aeration tank, providing a surface for biofilm growth while allowing suspended sludge to coexist. This dual biomass configuration increases the total microbial concentration (suspended solids + biofilm) without increasing sludge volume index, improving resistance to fluctuating loads.
Working Principle:Wastewater flows through the reactor, where suspended bacteria in the AS flocs degrade soluble organics, while biofilm on the carriers targets particulate matter and slowly biodegradable compounds. The carriers, designed to be neutrally buoyant or slightly buoyant, are mixed by aeration or mechanical agitators, ensuring uniform contact and preventing clogging.
Advantages & Applications:
Higher Treatment Capacity: The biofilm can achieve biomass concentrations up to 20 g/L (compared to 3-5 g/L in pure AS), enabling higher organic loading rates (1.5-3.0 kg BOD/m³/day) and shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT: 4-6 hours vs. 8-12 hours in AS).
Improved Nutrient Removal: IFAS facilitates simultaneous nitrification and denitrification when operated under alternating aerobic/anaerobic conditions, making it ideal for municipal wastewater plants requiring low effluent nitrogen (e.g., <10 mg/L NH₄⁺-N).
Sludge Reduction: Biofilm reduces excess sludge production by 20-30% as microorganisms in the film have longer retention times, leading to more complete biomass decay.
Challenges:
Media Selection: Carriers must have high specific surface area (≥500 m²/m³), chemical resistance, and appropriate density to avoid sedimentation or floatation issues.
Maintenance Complexity: Periodic backwashing or mechanical cleaning may be needed to control biofilm thickness (optimal: 0.5-1.0 mm), as excessive growth can reduce mass transfer efficiency.
