The BYD Song PLUS Tailgate Assembly is a core rear opening and closing system component developed specifically for this vehicle model. As the highest-priced stamped steel body panel, it handles critical functions including trunk sealing, rear visibility, and vehicle aerodynamic optimization.
This product covers the tailgate sheet metal assembly, tailgate trim panel, and accompanying lift support components. Designed to OEM specifications, it fits Song PLUS DM-i, EV, and Champion/Honor Edition all series, directly replacing collision-damaged or rust-deformed tailgates.
Tailgate is heavy—two-person operation or support tool required: The tailgate assembly with glass and sheet metal is heavy. Two people must support it during removal to prevent sudden falling, personal injury, or paint damage.
Disconnect battery negative terminal before operation: The tailgate integrates the reversing camera, tail lights, and wiper motor. Disconnect power before unplugging any connectors.
Professional panel technician recommended: Tailgate installation involves hinge positioning and gap/flushness adjustment. Lack of experience may cause poor sealing or water leaks.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal and open the tailgate. Due to the weight, it is recommended that two people support the tailgate or use a tailgate support tool to prevent sudden falling after hinge bolts are removed.
Gently pry off the inner handle cover from the non-leather edge with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the two retaining screws with a T-30 Torx bit. Pry open the hidden small cover on the right edge and remove the internal screw with a T-20 Torx bit. Remove the long lower screw with a T-20 Torx bit (requires crouching to locate). After all screws are removed, pry the plastic clips (approximately 6) one by one with a flathead screwdriver, then grip both sides of the panel and pull outward evenly to separate it from the tailgate.
After separating the trim panel, disconnect the internal wiring connectors in sequence, including the reversing camera connector, tail light connector, and wiper motor connector (if equipped). Press the locking tab before pulling out each connector smoothly.
Ensure the tailgate is reliably supported before removing lift supports. Pry open the retaining clip on the piston end with a flathead screwdriver and pull the ball socket off the body-side ball stud. Then pull the sleeve-end ball socket off the tailgate ball stud. Repeat for both sides.
Use a 10mm socket to remove the upper and lower hinge bolts connecting the tailgate to the body (typically 2 per side). Two people should support the tailgate to prevent it from falling after all bolts are removed.
After removing all hinge bolts, separate the old tailgate assembly from the body. Be careful not to scratch the body paint or roof edge. Place the old tailgate on a soft surface to avoid glass or sheet metal damage.
Align the new tailgate with the body hinge positions. With two people supporting it, insert the hinge bolts and tighten preliminarily without fully securing to allow gap adjustment.
Tailgate gap adjustment key points: Loosen hinge bolts and gently push the tailgate left/right or up/down to even out gaps. After confirming satisfactory gaps, tighten lightly, close the tailgate, and check gap uniformity. If side screw adjustment is insufficient, loosen all screws and move the entire tailgate.
Latch centering adjustment: The tailgate latch can be centered via pre-installation state. Do not tighten the mounting bolts initially. Close the tailgate, allowing the lock body jaw to push the latch along the Y-axis to the centered position. Open the tailgate and tighten the bolts to specification; the latch is then fixed in the precise centered position.
After confirming satisfactory gap adjustment, tighten the hinge bolts one by one in a diagonal sequence. Apply even force, avoiding over-tightening that could damage threads.
Align the sleeve-end ball socket with the tailgate ball stud (ensure the piston section faces downward). Press the ball socket onto the ball stud with your thumb until a “click” is heard, indicating proper seating. Then align the piston-end ball socket with the body-side ball stud and press into place. Repeat for both sides.
Connect the tailgate harness connectors to the body harness, reconnecting the reversing camera, tail light, and wiper motor connectors. Ensure all clips are fully engaged. Align the trim panel with the tailgate clips and press evenly with your palm until a “click” is heard. Then tighten the three retaining screws (T-30 and T-20 Torx bits), and reinstall the inner handle cover and hidden small cover.
Restore vehicle power and test the following functions in sequence: tailgate open/close (mechanical), tailgate locking, reversing camera feed, tail lights/brake lights, and rear wiper (if equipped). Confirm even gaps after closing and no water leak risk.
Hinge bolts must be tightened to specified torque: Refer to the repair manual. Insufficient torque may cause tailgate sag or noise; excessive torque may damage threads.
Lift support piston must face downward: When installing tailgate lift supports, ensure the piston section faces downward. Never grip the middle of the support and apply lateral force, as this may damage the gas spring seal.
Two-person operation recommended: The tailgate assembly is heavy. Single-person operation may cause it to slip or scratch the paint. Two people are recommended.
Gap adjustment requires patience: Tailgate gap adjustment may require repeated open-close testing. It is recommended to tighten all bolts only after achieving satisfactory adjustment.
